During our recent trip to Maui, we had the chance to take a crash course in stand up boarding — a sport I had long wanted to master. It wasn’t my first time; I’d tried it once in Spain and another time in Alaska but had never quite gotten the hang of it.
So armed with the aloha spirit (or rather, ‘never say die’ spirit), I was determined to get myself on the board and ride the waves. That morning, we met up with our instructor from Sheraton Maui’s activity center, Isaac, who briefly explained the basics of stand up paddleboarding and quickly sent us out to sea. The winds were blowing hard and the waves were rather choppy. Alberto had no problem and was on his feet almost immediately. I, on the other hand, struggled to maintain my balance but I hung on tight and kept going. Thankfully, Isaac paddled out to sea and guided me step by step, right on the water.
And like a miracle, I was soon gliding on the water like a pro, blazing a trail behind me. We spent all afternoon out on the sea, paddling over spearmint blue water and fish swimming beneath our feet. There couldn’t have been a better way to soak up Maui.
Here’s a video we took with our GoPro right on our paddleboard:
The introduction to SUP course is free with a paddleboard rental. Find out the schedule of the course at the Sheraton Adventure Club.
