World’s 8 Most Enchanting Islands

Posted on May 31, 2010 by

It might be the summer wave that’s hitting me hard or the travel plans that I’ve been plotting over the past few weeks, but I can’t seem to get enough of gushing over paradisiacal summer destinations. So if you’re just like me, a dreamer and a summer-reveler, then get your bikini ready as we take a look at some of the world’s most enchanting islands: perfect for you and your loved one to slip away in no man’s land.

The Maldives

Mention the Maldives, and picture-perfect images of lavish water bungalows, sparkling turquoise waters and uninhabited islands come to mind. As the dream destination for luxury holidays, the Maldives is home to numerous world-class resorts that blend in perfectly with the natural environment. The Maldives is an island country in the Indian Ocean, made up of 26 beautiful atolls.

Christmas Island, Australia

What was once a refugee camp during the war is now a peaceful, quiet isle rich in endemic flora and fauna. The Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean, has had minimal human interference and therefore is home to some unique animal species that can only be found here. Come and catch the annual red crab migration, swim with whale shark or observe turtles nesting by night – it’s a wildlife lovers’ paradise.

Bora Bora, the French Polynesia

Surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef, Bora Bora is just one of the many islands in the French Polynesia. Made famous by its trademark water bungalows that stand on stilts over clear waters, Bora Bora has plenty to offer besides the ocean. Inland, you’ll be traversing the slopes of an extinct volcano, while its outdoor aquarium opens it doors to adventurers who’d like to snorkel with sharks.

Koh Rong, Cambodia

A deserted island that lies 40km off the coast of Sihanoukville in Cambodia, Koh Rong is one of the rare and unspoiled islands in the Gulf of Thailand. Those who prefer tranquility to the party islands of Thailand should head out here as soon as possible, as constructions to convert Koh Rong into a luxurious resort destination are underway. Here, expect a snowdrift bay, expansive ocean of clear waters and a jungle pimpled with waterfalls and luscious vegetation further inland.

Camiguin, the Philippines

With over 7.107 islands scattered all over the Philippines, how can one decide which island’s the best? Camiguin is located off the the northern coast of Mindanao, and is lesser known than the other attractive islands like Palawan, Cebu and Boracay. With a rich cultural heritage and diverse eco-system, besides the gorgeous sea, you’ll be able to engage in a wide spectrum of activities. Start you day by climbing its old volcano, soaking in the hot spring and then chilling out on miles of white beach before hiking out to its numerous waterfalls.

In this exotic Indian Ocean archipelago, expect turquoise waters similar to that of the Caribbean Islands, without the flashy resorts and tourists. With over 115 islands, couples can go island-hopping one day, forest-trekking through its lush foliage the next or scuba diving in its deep waters. This is definitely our top choice for a perfect blend of relaxation and wildlife-watching.

Palau, Micronesia

Another far-flung nation in the Pacific Ocean, Palau is as exotic as it can get. Rare orchids, plants and vines embellish the island’s lush jungle interiors. Palau is considered one of the world’s best dive locations with pristine coral reefs and proliferate marine life. It is also home to the Rock Islands, a unique phenomena of 485 jutting limestone islets. Its jellyfish lake offers an extraordinary experience like no other.

Vava’u, Tonga

Tonga, an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, is made up of 169 islands, with over 36 of them uninhabited. With such a remote location, there is hardly any doubt that you’ll find the cleanest beaches, richest marine life and untouched local culture here. Among the islands, Vava’u is one of the most stunning isles. Shaped like a jellyfish, Vava’u is made up of small islets trailing off like tentacles into a quiet lagoon. Hike up to Mt Talau or explore the Hunga Cliffs and catch a glimpse of humpback whales in winter.

Since they are all almost equally enchanting, I guess my deciphering factor would have to come down to the quality of the seafood, and I'm quite sure they all score pretty well. Tough decision on where to go….!

Ohhh this is such a mouth-watering list. Although only metaphorically. Don’t want any of that seawater in there! Planning on going to the Phillipines in April. What’s the weather like? Camiguin has gone on my list. Thank you Nellie for reviving this post at the right time.

April is a good time to go – Philippines being in the tropics is hot all year round. I loved Cebu and Dumaguete, but also wanna go to Palawan next time I’m back! Have a great trip and don’t forget to share with us some photos when you’re back!
