As a new media enthusiast and travel blogger, I’m a sucker for travel technology. I travel with a whole backpack of electronic devices and gadgets and I use just about any travel app that can help make my life on the road easier.

As you probably know by now, one of my favourite travel apps is TripVerse. I’ve raved about it here before, as well as on my social channels, and probably everywhere else. That’s because I truly find it useful and I think it can add value to YOUR life as well!

To give you some background knowledge, TripVerse is a travel planning app that I love using to create my itinerary and get ideas from other travellers based on their itineraries. It’s a great way to get a unique perspective of a destination from other traveler’s itineraries. Once I’ve compiled a list of activities I want to do at the destination, I’ll then use the app to locate those places when I’m traveling offline. TripVerse app’s offline accessibility can save a lot of hassle, time and some money while traveling.

New Features on TripVerse

When I first started using TripVerse in June 2015, it was still in beta phase and new features and development were constantly rolled out. Since the last time I wrote about TripVerse, it’s gone through a redesign and added new features that have only made it all the more useful for travel planning.

  • Trip collaboration: Instead of being able to only view a shared trip, you can now allow other people to add activities to your trip and allow other TripVerse members to join the trip.
  • Storytelling feature: Each activity can have multiple pictures attached (around 5) and each picture can have its own comment added to it. TripVerse will evolve to become part travel planner part journal.
  • Increased interaction: Other users will be able to comment on the activities of a public trip in the form of annotations.

How I Plan My Trips with TripVerse

For instance, on my recent trip to Alsace, France, I did my research before the trip and created an itinerary on TripVerse that included every activity I wanted to do on the trip. Once in France, I used TripVerse to navigate my way around while offline. It saved me tons of time trying to locate these spots on Google Maps as well as money on data.

The only issue I found was that I needed to research before leaving for the trip so that I could add them to the app while online to save them for offline usage. I would have preferred if I could actually research while on the road, but that would require an internet connection I guess.

I’m currently in Bali, using TripVerse to plan things to do here — including the most beautiful temples to visit, best beaches, and the island’s most popular restaurants. Take a look at my Bali itinerary to get a feel for what I’ll be doing on this island.

Besides being a great trip planner, TripVerse also allows you to explore other travellers’ itineraries and get inspiration on where to go next. A word of warning though: it can fuel your wanderlust and get you booking your next flight before you know it! All you need to do is click the ‘Explore’ button on the homepage, and you’ll be shown a bunch of featured itineraries or the latest itineraries.

How to Use TripVerse on Your Next Trip

1. Create Your Own Itineraries

Once you sign up to TripVerse, you’ll see how easy it is to create your own itinerary and discover authentic itineraries that have been set up by other travelers.

To start planning your trip, all you need to do is click ‘create a trip’ on the top bar of the main page. Enter the location and write a short description of your trip. You can also upload a photo or choose one that you’ve already uploaded to Facebook. If you don’t have a photo, you can choose ‘Web images’ and the program will automatically pull one from online.

Once the trip is set up, you’ll be able to add activities. All you need to do is enter the activity name and the app will automatically provide the address, phone number, photo and even local tip. You can then organize your activities into day 1, day 2, etc.

If you’re creating the trip on the TripVerse website, you can even see a list of suggested activities, divided into various categories — sights, arts, outdoors, food, coffee, shopping and nightlife. This is where you can get inspiration on what’s best to see and experience.

2. Share Your Trip

The app and website also allows you to explore and discover trips created by other travelers by searching for locations, keywords and duration of stay. It’s a great place to get inspiration and ideas for your next trip.

You can easily share the itinerary with your friends or travel partners by clicking on the ‘add people’ icon and entering their email addresses.

One major upgrade they recently built is the ability to share trip itineraries by copying the unique trip code and sending it to anyone with or without a TripVerse account. The trip code is a unique URL that anyone signs up through it will see the shared trip residing in their newly-created TripVerse account.

Each trip comes with three privacy settings, so you can decide who can see your itinerary:

  • Private – only the user can view the trip
  • Public – anyone can view the trip
  • Link share – only people with the trip URL or a unique trip code for each trip can see it

4. Using the Planner Offline

This is definitely the app’s selling point.

Once you’ve created the trip on your phone or through the website, you can then download the trip on your app to view offline. It’s as easy as clicking on the top right tab and choosing ‘download trip’. You can then get directions to the activities you want to do using the offline map.

At times when you’re out in nature or away from cell signal, you’ll still be able to use this app to help you find the hiking trail your friends recommended or the bookstore you read about online. There’s no need for a local SIM card or mobile internet devices, all you need is TripVerse.
