Photoblog: Streets of Antigua Guatemala

Posted on November 4, 2009 by

You know how every traveler has that something for this particular place in the world? Mine’s Guatemala. It was here, where I took baby steps into the world of guidebook writing, met several amazing writers and I saw the world through their eyes.

Antigua might be overhyped and packed with tourists and touts, but its charm is still undeniable.  Colorful colonial-style houses line the cobblestoned streets, with the giant volcanoes as a backdrop. The city, as its name implies, epitomizes old colonial architecture and holds on to indigenous spirits. I won’t say more, but let these shots bring you through the streets of Antigua.

Our apartment in Antigua We stayed in a beautiful apartment that was part of the school where I attended the travel writing course. Waking up to a view of the volcano each day made me want to stay.

[…] Guatemala’s public buses are nicknamed the ‘Chicken Bus’ for the hectic and tight conditions where  passengers are crammed into these old U.S. school buses alongside chicken and goats. For the intrepid travelers seeking a little adventure, it’s quite an interesting way to get under the skin of the country. Some chicken buses are decked out in neon signs or voodoo posters, but all pose the same thrill. Be warned – petty crimes have been reported on these buses. […]
