Last weekend, I received an email from a friend in Tanzania and it reminded me of all the beautiful times we had there almost three years ago. If you’ve been reading about my travels for awhile now, you’ll probably know that Tanzania has a special place in my heart.

In 2008, Alberto and I spent a few months volunteering in Tanzania and during our stay, we forged strong friendships with locals, learned lifelong lessons from my students and explored different corners of the country. Tanzania gave me some of my best travel memories – with its amazing people, stunning beauty and striking characteristics. Here are some of the highlights of my stay there.

Volunteering in Bomang’nombe

Through a European non-profit organization, we’d arranged to volunteer at the local education office in Bomang’nombe, a village at the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Our main role there was to help reconstruct a school (build windows, doors and sturdier walls) and teach English.

The experience at Bomani Primary School was one of my most memorable travel experiences thus far – from getting to know my students well, visiting them at their orphanage, spending invaluable time with them after school to forming close relationships with the local villagers and feeling like part of their community.

Volunteering is one of the best ways to truly immerse oneself in a country – we’d arranged the volunteering stint independently but there are also several tour operators that design tailor-made holidays to combine volunteering with travel.

Visiting Small Villages and Towns

Some of my favorite places in Tanzania were small villages where our local friends brought us to. These places represent the heart of Tanzania – where local women are decked out in colorful kitenges, random Masais roam and children play in open fields. We’d spent a few days in the capital of Dar Es Salaam and didn’t like it one bit: chaotic traffic, air pollution and overwhelming touts. In contrast, the villages we enjoyed were quiet, relaxed and calm.

A friend brought us to his hometown, Machame, and we instantly fell in love with the waterfalls, banana plantations and curious people (everyone came up to me to touch my hair). In Marangu, we visited our friend’s mother who told us plenty of her childhood stories and legends. It was through these heartlands, that we got to know Tanzania under its surface.

Serengeti Wildlife Safari

Tanzania has some of the best wildlife-watching opportunities in Africa – and as avid wildlife buffs, we were stoked to go on a wildlife safari through the famous Serengenti National Park. From Arusha, we booked ourselves on a 4-day safari that brought us through Serengeti, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater.

There is a wide variety of safaris available: from luxury safaris in massive, enormous tents to basic camping safaris. Being budget travelers, we opted for a basic camping safari after scouring through the tour operators. Expect to pay up to $1,500 per person for a luxury safari in Tanzania and $600 for a basic camping safari (prices depend on season). You can usually find good last-minute deals in Arusha.

Beach-bumming on Zanzibar Island

Zanzibar island, a short ferry-ride from the capital, is one of the most beautiful islands I’ve ever been. We left this for the last part of our trip and spent two weeks relaxing and soaking up a different vibe of the country. Upon arriving on Zanzibar, we rented a jeep and took time to explore every inch of the island. Our first base was Paje, a quiet patch of beach with only fishermen in sight. Then we moved to Nungwi, where we met fellow travelers, went snorkeling and had the best seafood in Tanzania. Zanzibar signified a dreamy end to our amazing trip through Tanzania but it definitely left me wanting for more.

Since travelling became a significant part of my lifestyle, I’d come to realize that a conventional travel itinerary was just not enough to feed my thirst for complete cultural immersion or adventurous endeavors. It was time to ditch the guidebook and delve a little deeper, to get to know my destination inside out. Slow travel (usually means spending more than a month at a place) definitely does the trick, but if you haven’t got the time, here are some other ways to help spice up your journey and make it more than just travel.

1. Volunteer

Over the past ten years, voluntourism has gained popularity, especially among young travelers. Many people include a short volunteering stint in their travel plans. I personally volunteered at an education office in a small village in Tanzania two years back – the emotional ride was one of the best times in my life. Programs such as the Peace Corps assign volunteers to places that need help. Many organizations require a program fee, so do your research before signing up.

2. Hop on a Cruise

I’m not talking typical Caribbean party cruises. Think mid-sized cruises that bring you through the isolated Norwegian fjords or the massive icebergs in the Arctic and island-hopping in the Galapagos. Cruising offers a different perspective, especially in remote and secluded areas like the North Pole. They allow us to get to territories that cannot be visited otherwise. Discount cruises can be an interesting way to travel and even a cost-cutting one.

Photo from Destination360

3. Learn A Skill

From culinary classes to meditation courses, there are plenty of learning opportunities that gives you the chance to know the local culture better. Traveling to China? Take a tai-chi class or a kung-fu introductory course and you’ll leave with more than just photographs. In Japan, you can take a class from a veteran geisha to learn about their traditional ethics and behavior. Many embark on culinary tours around Italy and Spain to dig deeper into their gastronomy, learning to whip up typical Mediterranean dishes and sample local wine.

Photo from Tripadvisor

4. Couchsurf

The trend is here to stay: couchsurfing is now used worldwide, where members contact locals who are willing to offer them a couch to crash in or just meet up for a coffee. I personally have tried couchsurfing several times and have had amazing experiences every single time. It’s the perfect way to meet locals, understand their lifestyle, cultural habits and customs. Check out my previous post on couchsurfing.

Photo from shoestringmag

5. Book an Adventure Tour

Whether you are climbing icebergs in the Patagonia or trekking through the Amazon Jungle, an adventure tour definitely gives you the thrills of travel. It challenges you to your limit, gives you an adrenaline-pumping experience and allows you to explore a part of the country you might not be able to on your own. A tour usually takes up a chunk of your travel budget, but hey, no pain no gain. It’s often cheaper to book the tour at your destination rather than through the internet.

6. Pick Up a New Language

Another popular traveling option is language immersion: the most typical being Spanish classes in Guatemala, Argentina or Spain. Latin America is a top choice for language courses thanks to the low cost of living, rich culture and wide range of options available. These days, Mandarin is becoming the hottest language – so why not head further afield to Beijing? English is not commonly spoken, so you’ll definitely get plenty of practice.

7. Homestay

Most study-abroad programs consist of homestays where local families host you in the comfort of their homes, cooking you typical meals and speaking to you only in their language. Those who have had first-hand experience only have good things to say about this. Many build strong relations with their host families and often keep in touch after returning home. Even if you’re not a on study-abroad program, there are still many opportunities to go on a homestay. For instance, accommodation in Cuba is often in the form of homestays. They are cheaper and a better choice for many.

8. Get a Part-time Job

Work as diving instructor, teacher, chef, au-pair or cruise crew, there are thousands of working options available. For many countries, being a native English speaker gives you the advantage to find work easily. In Spain, you can easily find work as a teacher in an English summer camp. Depending on your skills, short-term work not only allows you to earn an extra income, but also gives you the experience of living and working in a new country.

  Photo from Season Workers

The whole world’s eyes are on Haiti now, as the poorest country in the Americas faces yet another devastating disaster. Death toll has now reached over 200,000 at Port-au-Prince, the country’s capital. These numbers are still increasing as survivors are losing patience with the painfully slow process of getting international aid.

As I sit facing horrifying images of desperation on the streets of Haiti, dumping of bodies in mass graves and violent looting occurring, it’s hard not to feel inflicted with the urge to help. I’m glad to have seen so many organizations, countries support teams and media channels acting so quickly to lend a hand.

Matador Network – Join in as a Volunteer

Matador Network, one of the online travel networks I work with, responded immediately. Editor Julie Schwietert launched a volunteering project on the night of the disaster - using social media to convince JetBlue to fly a plane full of volunteers to nearby Santo Domingo. Julie has been working around the clock since, to coordinate with ground staff and seeking help from the Haitian Consulate in NYC. Check for daily updates here.

The response has been overwhelming, they are now prioritizing on looking for volunteers with medical experience and or Creole/French language skills. If you are interested in jumping on the plane and offering your help on the ground, email Julie directly at matadorhaiti@gmail.com.

One of the Matador volunteers, Vladimir Tilus has already arrived in Port-au-Prince last night. Vladimir delivered water and food to the children of the Bresma orphanage, as they had run out of water completely and food was running low. Though the kids are not out of danger yet, these critical supplies will help them hang on a bit longer.

Support Worthy Organizations

BBC has a list of charities involved in the relief effort – useful for donors based in the UK. Contact the charity organizations directly to find out how you can help.

CNN also put together a comprehensive list of aid organizations, categorized by services being provided: basic needs, shelter, medical aid, and food.

Paul Clammer, the author of Lonely Planet Haiti guide, advised interested parties to support these three organizations in Haiti:

I’d like to mention three excellent smaller organizations in Haiti worthy of your support – these are the sort of smaller players who inevitably get overlooked in the media scrum, but often have more focused and effective programs working among local communities – essential characteristics once the immediate heavy lifting of disaster relief is over, and the media and world inevitably turn their attention to the next story.

Partners in Health A medical charity that has been working in Haiti for a long time, building local medical capacity. Run by MD Paul Farmer, a noted writer on Haiti, it has a large network of Haitian doctors and nurses well-placed to offer immediate and long- term medical assistance.

The Lambi Fund A smaller but highly regarded development charity. It offers assistance to communities outside Port- au-Prince (areas also hit by the effects of the quake) to help arrest the decline of the agricultural sector which has driven hundreds of thousands of young people from the countryside to search for a livelihood in the capital’s now-stricken shanty-towns.

Yele A development NGO working mainly in education and community projects, but with extensive experience in food distribution and emergency relief. Yele was set up by the musician Wyclef Jean, who is also a Goodwill Ambassador for Haiti (celeb watchers will be amused that a few years ago he got Brad and Angelina to visit the notorious Cite Soleil shanty at a time when the heavily armed Brazilian peacekeepers were too scared to go there). It’s close ties to communities in some of the poorest and worst affected areas will be invaluable in the coming weeks and months.

Right now, with logistic problems on the ground, it might be a challenge getting volunteers to Haiti. The best way to help is to donate, the organizations need as much funds as possible to provide supplies, medical support and food. The destruction is so substantial that it might take a few years for Haiti to slowly get back on its feet.

In the meantime, we can continue to do our part and pray for the wellbeing of the country, and hope that the sun will shine in Haiti again.

Help Build a School in Cambodia

This November, we will be supporting American Assistance for Cambodia (AAfC), an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving opportunities for the youth and rural poor in Cambodia. Our goal for 2009 is to raise $13,000, so we can build a school in rural Cambodia!

Why We Need Your Help

Speaking from personal experiences, I visited a school in rural Cambodia in 2008 and got to know the children, learning about their environment. Children there are deeply in need of proper facilities and infrastructure. At times, almost 40 students are squeezed into a tiny classroom fit for half the size.

Problems like lack of trained teachers, educational funds and structured education system continue to plague these rural areas. Building a school would be an excellent start to improving their lives. The process is slow, but by putting in relentless efforts, we could be getting there step by step. With everyone’s combined contribution, we might be making a difference to many of their lives.

Visa Requirements

Depending on how long you would like to stay in the specific destination, work could mean a short-term bar job or a contractual professional position abroad. You usually do not need a visa for a temporary job, but it is important to obtain a visa for long-term stay (>3 months). Commonwealth citizens may find it easier to live in fellow Commonwealth countries – e.g. British citizens can easily apply for an Australian visa to stay for up to 2 years. (Read How to Live & Work in the UK/Australia.)

1. Summer Jobs

These temporary jobs abroad are usually suitable for young and energetic individuals looking for a new experience after graduation. Types of work include — bar staff, ski instructor (for Winter ski holidays), animador (entertaining staff in all-inclusive resorts), dive instructor, hotel receptionist, au pair, translator etc. These websites provide job bulletins with specific positions around the world.

2.Internship

Recent graduates might find an internship abroad an amazing opportunity for both their personal and professional development. Thousands of companies accept interns from abroad, although many are unpaid positions. These are some specific internships available.

3. Teach English Abroad

A popular choice among many, it is rather easy to obtain a teaching job especially if you are a native speaker. Countries where teachers are highly demanded include – Spain, Czech Republic, Korea, Japan, and China. These are paid positions and remuneration is especially good in Asia. TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) is a bonus when finding a teaching job.

4. Volunteering

Although most volunteering positions are unpaid, you can still find some that offer a humble stipend. Roles include – organizing social activities, organic farming and teaching. Nueva Alianza in Guatemala is an example of paid volunteering.

5. Travel Writing/Blogging

Many travelers keep a blog to share their experiences on the road with friends and families. After gaining readership, some actually start earning money from their blogs through advertising and paid blog assignments. Travel writers are slightly different, they pen articles based on their travels for magazines and this also provides a flow of income on the road. Here are some useful articles to help it come true:

6. Work Wirelessly

This new and hip way of life is creating a new trend in the travelling world, as many pack their bags and laptops, working from anywhere around the world. Whether you are a web developer, project manager or editor, you no longer need to step into an office for your job. These insightful blogs provide tips on how you could actually achieve it.

Having received several emails from my readers, about how I sustain my long-term travels, both financially and professionally, I figured I might just share some of my own experience with you. (Thanks for writing to me, keep them coming!)

Truth be told, long-term travelling is not easy, but if you set yourself some rules, and want it badly enough, you can do it. Anyone can!

As much as I wish, I’m actually not typing away at the Iguazu Falls now, I don’t travel full-time. Like you, I also hold a permanent 40-hours-a-week job, stretching my annual vacation to the maximum, and well, saving for the next trip. But with some planning, I get to squeeze in at least 10 trips a year, and still be able to pay my bills. And no, my job doesn’t let me travel the World.

Here are some of my tips to help you get closer to travelling long-term. Hang on tight, the ride’s gonna be thrilling!

1. Plan Ahead

For those who find it difficult to get away from work, draw out a virtual map and point out which are the places you’ll like to see this year. Check the calendar for long weekends and Public Holidays, and let your boss know of your vacation now! Although you might only end up with short trips, but honestly, 4 days are perfect to visit nearby cities like Saigon or Siem Reap. Planning your travels in advance also ensures that you will have other responsibilities accounted for.

2. Manage Your Finances

Create an excel sheet to draft your finances clearly, consider your monthly expenses, bills to be paid and set a strict amount to save every month. Trust me, this definitely keeps your accounts in check, and when faced with numbers, you’ll surely start scrooching.

Are you willing to sacrifice extravagant dinner meals and visits to the mall, in exchange for a 3-month trip to South America? I’ve had to cut down on my consumption in order to sustain this long-term travelling lifestyle. Have I regretted any of it? Not a minute of it. From meeting the girls over free drinks on Ladie’s Night, to cooking at home (candle-light dinner), you can still pamper yourself with a simpler lifestyle.

3. Prioritize what you want in Life

There are always people who whine about their boring lives, blaming it on their kids or their jobs. There just always seem to be an excuse for leaving your dreams of travelling the world behind and leading a monotonous life. You could either envy those who get to experience new adventures ever so often, OR you could make that YOUR life. Focus on what you want to achieve, work hard to ensure that your commitments are well taken care of, and then book that ticket, and you’re on your way!

4. Working Abroad

The easiest way to know a country or region inside out is by working and living abroad. It’s not as difficult these days, as it used to be. You can teach English abroad, or apply for a Work Holiday Maker Visa (opened to citizens of Commonwealth countries), or volunteer. There are endless options now, if you look hard enough. Read my post on ‘How to Make the Big Move’ for more details.

I usually use the country I live in as a base, to travel around the region. This way, you get to see as much as you like in the continent, using budget airlines, stretching over a longer period of time. Working in Europe also allows you to take up to 2-3 months of summer vacation; that’s the best time to travel!

5. Travel in between Jobs

Time is of essence when you have a job to return to. So grab the time in between jobs to travel for as long as you can afford! Between each of our moves, we travelled for 2-3 months, to break down the long distance and also to catch up on some serious travelling. As much as I enjoy taking short breaks off work to travel near home, nothing beats taking your time to slowly see exotic sights at a comfortable pace. (especially knowing that you’re not returning to a sucky job!)

Over the past few years, I have been packing up, moving on to a different job and a different city every other year, because I’d chosen to. Although some employers might not look at it in a positive light, I can safely (and proudly) say that not many have had the chances to work in 3 countries on 3 vastly different roles, learning substantially both professionally and spiritually. Still, I have accumulated many more visas and chops on my passport, priceless life lessons and lifelong friends, than a secure job could ever have given me.

6. Find your Travel Soul Mate

He could be your lifetime partner, your best friend, or even yourself (travelling solo can be equally fulfilling); I believe having a travel soul mate is essential to long-term travelling. He acts as a motivation, a harbor and mostly, someone to share the ups and downs of travelling together. While some people prefer to wing it solo, I have found travelling long-term to be possible and part of our lifestyle, thanks to an adventurous partner, Alberto.

7. Just do it!

No more talking about surfing in Costa Rica, or white-water rafting in the rapids of Borneo, it’s time to DO it! Sometimes all it takes is a click on the button ‘Pay Now’, and there’s no turning back. Pluck up your courage, and let life twirl you around on an adrenaline-pumping rollercoaster ride!

I’ve seen so many people leading an exciting life of adventures but at the same time, sustaining a fulfilling career at home. You just need to take the first step, and you might just lead the life you’ve always dreamt of.

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

3 days ago, the 24-year-old Peace Corps volunteer from Georgia named Catherine Puzey, was found dead outside her home in a remote, rural village of Badjoudè . Her death is understood to have been a murder, though neither the US nor Benin governments have officially declared it so.

From the passionate personal blog of the late Catherine Puzey, you could feel her compassion to help, and her love for Benin. Here’s her public gallery of photos taken during her travels around West Africa. She was loved intensely by family, friends, and fellow volunteers — and by the Beninois community that had become her home.

According to the Fallen Peace Corps Volunteers Memorial Project, “more than 180,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 138 countries” since John F. Kennedy created the program in 1961. “Of these dedicated men and women, 274 have sacrificed not only their energies and time, but also their lives while pursuing the Peace Corps mission.”

As a volunteer myself who had spent some time in Tanzania, East Africa, reading such tragic news is hard to swallow. Africa did not feel dangerous to me, and it startles me with the danger that might lurk around the corner. It is scary to learn of such tragedies, but I hope it does not stop other Peace Corp volunteers from giving their help to wherever that needs them.

My deepest condolences to the friends and family of this amazing woman who’s given herself to building a better and more peaceful world.

Through the past few years of moving from one city to another, many people have asked me these questions again and again, ‘How do you get all that money to travel?’, ‘Have you considered carefully about what it will do to your career?’ , and of course,‘ What about your family and friends at home?‘

We had packed our bags right after throwing our convocation hats sky high, leaving all our University loan behind, and set off on this journey of a lifetime. To this day, I have never regretted a thing, and still loving every single minute of our globetrotting lives. Granted, we miss our families and friends from time to time, especially habits from home – like Alberto and his daily siestas, and for me, the ultra-spicy local food; but life away from home always has new adventures and challenges in store for us.

While these days, no one really questions us on our careers (We’ve somehow managed to find our directions in life despite changing jobs every year), many still wonder how we did it. It was never a bed of roses – we made many sacrifices, compromised with each other and weighed our life priorities constantly. But for us, it has been the most fruitful and fulfilling journey that has made every little negativity worthwhile.

To share how we made the big move of our lives, here are some of steps we took:

1. Evaluate your priorities

Do you really want to live and work abroad so badly that you could forgo leaving your best friend behind, or a possibility of climbing the corporate ladder, or perhaps the long-term relationship with your childhood sweetheart? Remember it is after all a long-term move, not just another 3-week vacation away from home.

2. Decide on where to go, and set a timeline

Most of you would already have a destination in mind- usually where you daydream of everyday- be it the Caribbean or Africa, you CAN do it! Book yourself on a 1-way ticket, and that’s it! No procrastination or hesitation! Have a date fixed for at least 6months away to have sufficient time for preparation and decision-making.

3. Start saving hard!

You might have to forgo the Friday parties with the gals, or extravagant dinners at your favorite Italian joint. Saving hard needs some amount of discipline and sacrifices, especially for the big-city girls, who are too accustomed to the cosmopolitan lifestyle (the old me)! It really depends of what kind of person you are – it might require some adjustments, but soon enough, your piggy bank would be bulging so much that no fancy dinner would tempt you.

4. Job-hunting with determination

Ask those who have moved abroad, and you’ll know this is always the most difficult part. Especially with this current economic climate, the chances of bagging a job close to your professional line are even slimmer than before. If you’re not too picky, try out these jobs that are always in demand:

Teaching English (in Japan, Spain or South America – everyone needs them!) – It’s the most popular choice and the easiest yet most fulfilling one I’d say.

Working in a resort or tourist-dominated area (try Marbella or Ibiza in Spain, or Disney in Orlando)

Volunteering (although wanting to help should be your priority, but this is definitely a good opportunity to experience living abroad – try Buffalotrails.com whom we volunteered with)

Working as an au-pair (Living with a family as a part-time nanny is extremely popular in Europe- especially Spain and France)

UK/Australia Work Holidaymaker Visa – only for citizens of the Commonwealth countries (That’s how I got my visa to work in London)

5. Just do it!

So you might not have found a job at the end of the 6-month hunt, but armed with your newly updated CV, detailed research on the job market and country you’re moving to, your chances of bagging a job is doubled when you’re actually there in person. Time to set off on your dream journey already! The key to enjoying this experience is to have faith and determination in yourself – believing that you will do it. That, and some courage. So bring your guts, along on this life-changing journey that you sure will look back in future and smile at what a life you had.

was on my list of the ‘things to do before I die‘.
The whole experience was awesomely astounding
out of this world, and never like anything u could ever imagine.
That surreal feeling of being so close to an animal in the wild.
In their natural habitat.
Where you are the intruder.
Nothing ever comes close to that sorta feelin’.
Of how the world should be,
without civilization, without buildings, without destruction…

In the middle of Lake Manyara National Park
overlooking a flock of over a million flamingoes..
it was an awestriking view…

I turned n looked behind at our trail behind the jeep.
It just struck me how free and opened it felt,
to be out in the open,
in the middle of nowhere
no longer cramped amidst huge cities..
This was the feeling Africa gave me.
that special feeling nowhere else has ever given me.

we saw millions of Wildebeest..
These animals migrate from one grazing land to another
We were real lucky to have witnessed their once-a-year migration.
