<p align="justify">Just last month, I spent a few days in the sizzling heat of <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/category/by-country/europe/spain/madrid/" target="_blank">Madrid</a> to catch up with a good friend who’d come all the way from Canada to Spain for our wedding. We both used to live in the bustling Spanish capital, where we spent most of our time roaming the streets, partying, meeting new people and discovering local haunts and secret corners.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://photos.wildjunket.com/Europe/Spain/Madrid/i-wR9T9qn/0/M/MG8412-M.jpg"><img class="aligncenter" title="Gran Via in Madrid, Spain" src="http://photos.wildjunket.com/Europe/Spain/Madrid/i-wR9T9qn/0/M/MG8412-M.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="400" /></a></p>
<p align="justify">After being away for two years, we wanted to relive those good ol’ days. This time, we didn’t want to stay in hostels or hotels and feel like an outsider. Madrid was like home to us, and we wanted to experience it like a local again.</p>
<p align="justify">We decided to try out short-term apartment rental with <a href="http://www.wimdu.com/" target="_blank">Wimdu</a>, a new travel website that is a cross between couchsurfing and hotel-stays. It gets travelers away from stuffy hotels and into locals’ homes and apartments. Instead of crashing on someone’s couch, we got the privacy of our own apartment and at the same time, tips and advice from our host.</p>
<p align="justify">All of <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/category/by-country/europe/spain/madrid/" target="_blank">Madrid’s attractions</a> were right at our doorstep. The majestic <em>Palacio Real</em> stood metres away from our apartment, while the crowded <em>Plaza Mayor</em> and <em>Puerta del Sol</em> were just a five-minute walk away. We were literally in the heart of the city. </p>
<p align="justify">Throughout our four days in Madrid, we walked everywhere: from the main artery of the city, <em>Gran Vía</em>, to the Sunday flea market <em>el Rastro</em> in the eclectic <em>La Latina</em> district. Thanks to the convenient location of our apartment, we could easily hop back for a siesta after lunch and then pop right out onto the streets to people-watch come sunset. We didn’t even take the metro, which I’m not a huge fan of (after years of commuting to work at peak hours and facing depressed 9-to-5ers on a daily basis).</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://photos.wildjunket.com/Europe/Spain/Madrid/i-fwSkJ4s/0/L/MG8363-L.jpg"><img class="aligncenter" title="Plaza Oriente in front of Royal Palace" src="http://photos.wildjunket.com/Europe/Spain/Madrid/i-fwSkJ4s/0/L/MG8363-L.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="600" /></a></p>
<p align="justify">Located in a semi-circular plaza lined with alfresco cafes, our apartment had a view that opened up to the colorful Cabo Noval gardens surrounding the Royal Palace. As it was summer, the massive terrace was shrouded by trees, which blocked out a view of the palace, but in exchange offered us privacy. The building that housed our spacious apartment was a classic Renaissance-style edifice featuring high ceilings and old-school mechanical lifts.</p>
<p align="justify">The interior design and decór of the apartment was beyond our expectations: Featuring aged hardwood floors and timber beams, the stylish apartment combined the rustic look with slick lines and futuristic furnishing. Enormous floor-to-ceiling glass windows separated the terrace from the split-level living room, opening up to plenty of natural light.Supporting the timber beams were polished steel structures which represented an important design feature in this space, as did the steel staircase leading to the second bedroom. The apartment was extremely spacious, with plenty of room for four persons. With the well-equipped kitchen, we could also cook and prepare our meals, saving us food expenses.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://photos.wildjunket.com/Europe/Spain/Madrid/i-jk7sGQv/1/M/IMG0855-M.jpg"><img class="aligncenter" title="Madrid apartment" src="http://photos.wildjunket.com/Europe/Spain/Madrid/i-jk7sGQv/1/M/IMG0855-M.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="334" /></a></p>
<p align="justify">All in all, it was an excellent experience, and considering the value for money, renting an apartment was definitely a cost-effective way to travel. I’ll be writing more about short-term apartment rentals. In the meantime, have you used short-term apartment rental during your travels? Share your experience here!</p>
<p align="justify"><em>This apartment costs €205 a night and accommodates up to four persons. There’s a wide range of </em><a href="https://www.wimdu.com/user/offers/1ZJ0Q7X9?currency=EUR" target="_blank"><em>Madrid apartments</em></a><em> to choose from on Wimdu, with prices as low as €45/night for a comfortable studio apartment. </p></div>
<p align="justify">On a recent trip to Kuala Lumpur and <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2011/01/21/jungle-trekking-in-sarawak-borneo/" target="_blank">Sarawak</a>, I had the opportunity to stay at <a href="http://www.tunehotels.com/" target="_blank">Tune Hotels,</a> a Malaysian chain that’s taking the hotel industry by storm. Since its launch in 2007, Tune Hotels has since opened up 12 properties all over <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2010/06/04/5-top-adventures-in-malaysia/" target="_blank">Malaysia</a>, <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2009/04/26/spiritual-temples-of-borobudur/" target="_blank">Indonesia</a> and even <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2010/03/26/7-free-things-to-do-in-london/" target="_blank">London, UK.</a>&#160; I’d been wanting to check out Tune Hotels for myself, curious to know what the hype was all about. </p>
<h3 align="justify">New Hotel Concept</h3>
<p align="justify">Staying at their flagship branch in downtown Kuala Lumpur, I scouted out the property and was intrigued by the entire <a href="http://www.tunehotels.com/concept" target="_blank">concept of Tune Hotels.</a> <strong>Here’s out it works:</strong></p>
<p align="justify">You pay the basic room rate, which starts at an alarming rate of <em><strong>9.99RM (US$3) per night</strong>.</em> The prices work in the same way as airfares, in a tiered system. The earlier you book, the cheaper the price. I spoke to a few guests at the hotel – some paid 80RM (US$25) for a double room while another paid 50RM (US$15) for a single room.</p>
<p align="justify">Then, you pay for extra items that you want – such as air-conditioning, towels and toiletries. You can always choose to bring your own to avoid these additional costs. </p>
<p align="justify"><img style="display: inline; float: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 20px" height="379" alt="Tune Hotels - Downtown KL : Main Building" src="http://www.tunehotels.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/room_full/gallery/hotel/downtown-kl/pix06l.jpg" width="523" /></p>
<p align="justify">Of course, there are mixed reactions to such pricing systems. Some might not like the idea of add-on costs – a middle-aged Singaporean woman staying at the KL branch shared with me, “<em>I’d rather pay one price and enjoy all the facilities that are included in the price.</em>” </p>
<p align="justify">While some find that the ‘pay-for-what-you-want’ system works for them, “<em>We are just looking for somewhere clean, private and well-located. The rates at Tune Hotels suit us just fine and we’ll definitely stay here again</em>,” said a young Australian couple.</p>
<h3 align="justify">Hostel vs Hotel</h3>
<p align="justify">It’s not just the innovative pricing system that makes Tune Hotels stand out. Tune Hotels provide facilities that border between a modern, well-equipped hostel and a contemporary hotel. Here, the technology and comforts we seek&#160; is combined with the budget that travelers look for. </p>
<p align="justify"><img style="display: inline; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px" height="212" alt="Tune Hotels - Danga Bay, Johor : Twin Room" src="http://www.tunehotels.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/room_full/gallery/hotel/danga-bay-johor/tunehotels-danga-bay-johor-pic03.jpg" width="292" align="right" />Biresh, Tune Hotels’ marketing manager, shared, “Our hotels are best suited to <strong><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2009/11/26/are-you-a-travel-snob/" target="_blank">flashpackers</a></strong>: travelers who are looking for budget accommodation yet seeking comfort and privacy.” </p>
<p align="justify">While they don&#8217;t offer pools, spas, room service or the like, you do get high quality spring mattress beds, heated Power Showers, central locations, WiFi in every room and 24-hour security. All these with an affordable price tag.</p>
<p align="justify">The thing I like most about Tune Hotels is its straight-forward marketing approach: just like a low-cost airline, it hones on value for money. It doesn’t pretend to be a 5-star hotel – instead, it screams out affordability and surprises people with high-standard facilities. </p>
<h3 align="justify">The Verdict</h3>
<p align="justify"><img style="display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px" height="229" alt="Tune Hotels - Bintulu : Double Room" src="http://www.tunehotels.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/room_full/gallery/hotel/bintulu/th-bintulu-double-room.jpg" width="305" align="left" />Besides speaking to Biresh and staying at Tune Hotels KL, I also attended the opening of the new <a href="http://www.tunehotels.com/our-hotels/bintulu" target="_blank">Tune Hotels Bintulu</a> in <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/tag/sarawak" target="_blank">Sarawak, Borneo</a>.</p>
<p align="justify">&#160; Bintulu is a destination better known for oil and gas than cultural attractions. Few tourists make it out here but it is all about to change thanks to tourism development efforts. </p>
<p align="justify">So what’s the verdict after my experience at Tune Hotels?</p>
<p align="justify">I personally believe that <strong>Tune Hotels is setting a new trend in the hotel industry,</strong> not just in Malaysia but world-wide. I can already see many new properties popping up in the hotel industry, in a bid to follow the footsteps of Tune Hotels. Many of them claim to offer low rates with high standard accommodation, but few are making it as big as Tune Hotels.</p>
<p><img style="display: inline; float: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 55px" height="285" alt="Tune Hotels - Bintulu : Lobby" src="http://www.tunehotels.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/room_full/gallery/hotel/bintulu/th-bintulu-lobby.jpg" width="455" /></p>
<p>And that’s not just it – Tune Hotels are working hard to open up more branches and improve their facilities. In 2011, they will be opening up new properties in <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/tag/philippines/" target="_blank">the Philippines</a>, London and India. Tune Hotels franchise will even spread to the Maldives and possibly other locations in <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2010/02/01/8-of-the-best-beaches-in-europe/" target="_blank">Europe</a>. </p>
<p>Since 5th Jan 2011, Tune Hotels have removed the admin fee from their rates – which only means cheaper rooms for guests. They’ve also packaged up the add-on fees, introducing deals such as the comfort package that ties up various add-ons.</p>
<p><strong>If yo’re still not convinced, here are </strong><a href="http://www.tunehotels.com/concept" target="_blank"><strong>5 reasons to choose Tune Hotels</strong></a><strong>. </strong></p>

<p align="justify"><i>For those who can’t stand it if it isn’t branded.</i></p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/WhitebedroomofMaisonMoschino.jpg"><img title="White-bedroom-of-Maison-Moschino" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="379" alt="White-bedroom-of-Maison-Moschino" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/WhitebedroomofMaisonMoschino_thumb.jpg" width="551" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p align="justify">From Vuitton loo rolls in Egypt to Bulgari bathmats in <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2008/09/22/rich-culture-and-beauty-in-bali/" target="_blank">Bali</a>, there are plenty of top brands out there offering a few nights of extravagant designer dreams. For those who like to travel in style, these are the trendiest designer hotel brands popping up in various parts of the world.</p>
<h3 align="justify">Louis Vuitton </h3>
<p align="justify">Not <i>strictly</i> the Louis Vuitton hotel, but LVMH, the group which owns the brand, now has a hotels division. A new hotel project overlooking the Nile in <u><a href="http://www.ulookubook.com/egypt-holidays">Egypt</a></u> has signalled the group&#8217;s intentions to expand, as the B&amp;B industry of Essex gears up for massive counterfeit operations!</p>
<p align="justify"><b><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/moonsoleil/502777021/"><img title="LV in Egypt" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-bottom: 0px" height="389" alt="LV in Egypt" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/clip_image004.jpg" width="546" border="0" /></a></b></p>
<h3 align="justify">Puerta America</h3>
<p align="justify">One for the name-droppers, the Puerta America in Madrid features rooms adorned with the signatures of a plethora of big names, including <strong>Victorio &amp; Lucchino, Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster, Jean Nouvel and Arata Isozaki to name but a few.</strong> From the outside, the building may be frowned upon by tasteful travelers – thanks to its rainbow-colored theme; but take a step inside and you’ll be transported to the stylish future.</p>

<p align="justify">The strapline <i>Stay with Armani </i>suggests an intimate weekend with the immortal playboy. <a href="http://www.armanihotels.com " target="_blank">Armani&#8217;s resorts</a> in Dubai and Milan promise the designer&#8217;s personal stamp on everything. <p align="justify">The <a href="http://www.jiahongkong.com/JIA.html " target="_blank">JIA boutique hotel</a> in Hong Kong was created by influential designer and architect Philippe Starck. <h3 align="justify">Bulgari Resorts</h3>
<p align="justify">The Italian jewellery maker Bulgari has a plush retreat in Bali, and their Milan hotel is a refurbished monastery. &#8216;Meditation corners&#8217; are included for the more contemplative oligarchs and cosmopolitan socialites out there.</p>

<h3 align="justify">Casa Camper </h3>
<p align="justify">Bit of a different one here, perhaps for the more quietly wealthy socialist types who might be found strolling in Camper&#8217;s footwear. Hotels in Barcelona and Berlin embody the brand&#8217;s commitment to ecological values.</p>

<p align="justify">Home to the world-famous <em>Taj Mahal</em>, Agra has gained worldwide fame for its impressive works of architecture. As the second corner of <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2010/08/23/indias-royal-pink-city-of-jaipur/" target="_blank">India’s popular Golden Triangle</a> along with Delhi and Jaipur, the city is rightfully an essential stop for visitors to India. But aside from the Taj Mahal, few people know about the gardens of Agra. The first Mughal Emperor, Babar, had brought into India the concept of gardens: fountains, fruit-bearing trees, fragrant flowers and water channels. Today the garden city of Agra is splashed in emerald green, with luscious greenery lining its streets. </p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_9071.jpg"><img title="The Taj Mahal" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="387" alt="The Taj Mahal" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_9071_thumb.jpg" width="568" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p align="justify">Blending beautifully into the city’s landscape is the <a href="http://www.itcwelcomgroup.in/Hotels/itcmughal.aspx" target="_blank">ITC Mughal Agra</a><strong></strong>, a Luxury Collection hotel set in 35 acres of luxurious gardens. Drawing inspiration from Agra’s garden flair, the plush hotel softens up its imposing redbrick exterior with emerald green grass, lotus ponds and blossoming lilies. Even the building’s red facade is inspired by the architectural marvels of the Mughal empire: resembling the <em>Agra Fort</em> and <em>Fatehpur Sikri</em>. </p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_8671.jpg"><img title="tn_IMG_8671" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="378" alt="tn_IMG_8671" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_8671_thumb.jpg" width="565" border="0" /></a>&#160;</p>
<h3>The Taj in the Distance</h3>
<h3>&#160; <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_8893.jpg"><img title="Taj Mahal, India" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="322" alt="Taj Mahal, India" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_8893_thumb.jpg" width="232" align="left" border="0" /></a>&#160; </h3>
<p align="justify"><strong>From our suite at ITC Mughal Agra, we were treated to a view of the ivory-white marble dome of the majestic Taj Mahal.</strong> Although the view was slightly obstructed by a series of corrugated roofs and sky soaring trees, it was clear that the Taj was just within a stone’s throw away. </p>
<p align="justify">Earlier that day, we had arrived to the humidity and heat of Agra only to be whisked right into the cushy comfort of our hospitable host, <a href="http://www.itcwelcomgroup.in/">ITC-Welcomgroup</a>. We were warmly welcomed by its staff and presented with beautiful jasmine flowers and a refreshing glass of coconut juice. </p>
<p align="justify">Back in our fifth-floor suite, we drank in the view from our cushy divan seating conveniently designed to sit right by the bay window. The Mughal inspired interior design is evident from the lavish furnishing: a elaborate Persian carpet, velvet upholstery, ancient traditional paintings and exotic teak furniture. A high-powered massage chair sits by our bedroom window, adding an element of relaxation to our suite. </p>

<p><em>“We have heard stories of how prosperous the Mughal empire was, with their lavish palaces, banquets and extravagant lifestyles. The only way to fully understand it, is to actually live it. Our hotel aims to give guests that&#160; experience.”</em> Jyoti Chitkara, the hotel’s marketing manager explained.</p>
<p>It’s no wonder the entire hotel is tuned to such refined perfection. As the winner of the first <strong>Aga Khan Award for Architectural Excellence </strong>to be won in India, ITC Mughal Agra definitely lives up to its reputation.</p>
<p>Jyoti brought us on a tour around the compound, starting from the resplendent lobby to its swimming pool and royal spa.</p>
<p>The hotel’s two Presidential suites have hosted a string of VIPs and celebrities including Nelson Mandela. The <em>Raja Mansingh Suite,</em> named after Emperor Akbar’s main advisor, offers a regal combination of royal ambiance and modern luxury. The suite is equipped with two rooms, massive marble-floored bathrooms and a sprawling living area decorated with antique chests and paintings. The <em>Tansen Suite,</em> named after Akbar’s favorite musician, is starkly contrasting with a romantic flair: a traditional swing looks out into the gardens, while a four-poster bed invites you to a cushy sleep. This suite is especially catered to honeymooners or couples looking for a tinge of romance.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_8733.jpg"><img title="Fur poster bed in Tansen Suite" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="378" alt="Fur poster bed in Tansen Suite" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_8733_thumb.jpg" width="565" border="0" /></a>&#160;</p>
<h3 align="justify">Royal Gourmet</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_8689.jpg"><img title="Tandoor food at Peshawri restaurant in Agra" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="Tandoor food at Peshawri restaurant in Agra" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_8689_thumb.jpg" width="224" align="left" border="0" /></a> Every meal at ITC Mughal was a royal feast, each one better than before. The hotel’s specialty restaurant, <strong>Peshawri,</strong> is a unique Tandoor restaurant that serves up North West Frontier cuisine in the traditional way. </p>
<p>Since its opening a few decades ago, the restaurant has yet to change its menu. Its head chef explained that they want to give their guests the classic, traditional style. Guests who have eaten here seem to come back again and again, with each visit springing a different surprise on them.</p>
<p>At <strong>Peshawri</strong>, we were encouraged to eat with our fingers. They believe that silverware when in contact with food produces a chemical reaction, thus affecting the original taste of the food. We devoured one slice of dish after another, savoring the richness and flavor of the barbequed meats.</p>
<p>Of the myriad of meats and vegetables dished out from the open kitchen, I particularly enjoyed the fried paneer (cottage cheese) stuffed with mint chutney. The roast leg of lamb when topped with the refreshing yogurt dip created an explosion of flavors in my mouth.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_8687.jpg"><img title="tn_IMG_8687" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="366" alt="tn_IMG_8687" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_8687_thumb.jpg" width="547" border="0" /></a></p>
<p align="justify">The hotel wins its guests over with its impressive culinary offerings. The <strong>Bagh-E-Bahaar</strong> multi-cuisine restaurant had an amazing array of foods on its menu – ranging from Western/European-style cuisine to traditional South Indian food. I was blown away by the South Indian feast that the head chef had specially designed for us. </p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_8795.jpg"><img title="Aouth Indian cuisine" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="379" alt="Aouth Indian cuisine" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_8795_thumb.jpg" width="567" border="0" /></a> </p>

The <strong><a href="http://www.itcwelcomgroup.in/KayaKalp/itckayakalp.aspx" target="_blank">Kaya Kalp Royal Spa</a>,</strong> just inaugurated two years ago, has already bagged several awards including the <em>Best City Spa of the World in 2008</em> by UK’s Tatler Magazine, as well as Asia Spa’s <em>Best new Spa of the Year</em> award. </p>
<p>In honor of Mughal Emperor Babar, the pomegranate fruit has been used as the theme of the spa. Combined with the extensive use of greenery and water, the spa gives an exotic, refreshing feel to the hotel. The mood is heightened at the lap pool, reserved only for spa guests.</p>
<p>Exhausted from weeks of traveling, I was treated to a <em>Pomegranate Journey</em> – the spa’s specialty treatment that included a pomegranate scrub, a bath that used pomegranate liquid and a full body massage. It was like knocking on the doors of heaven, indulging in the sensation and then returning back to Earth.</p>

<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2010/07/24/photoblog-streets-of-mumbai-erupting-into-colors/" target="_blank">Mumbai</a> – known as Bombay during its golden days – is a city of extremes: upscale skyscraping apartment buildings stand side by side with sprawling slums while futuristic shopping malls tower over shabby handicraft stalls. The new Mumbai is a financial hub that is growing so rapidly old Bombay is gradually left behind. Bombay’s architectural and cultural history is quickly being forgotten as vintage British-Indian edifices hide in the shadows while cutting-edge buildings take center stage. </p>
<p align="justify">With the theme ‘<em>Remembering Bombay’</em>, <a href="http://www.itcwelcomgroup.in/" target="_blank">ITC Grand Central Mumbai</a> brings back the city’s charming architectural styles from yesteryears, and spruces it up with modern touches. Built to resemble edifices erected during the British colonization days, the hotel has a charming gothic flair. Set in the city’s commercial district Parel, the five-star luxury hotel is not only an iconic landmark in the city, but also one of Mumbai’s finest. </p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7502.jpg"><img title="INDO-sARACENIC ARCHITECTURAL STYLE IN mUMBAI" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="INDO-sARACENIC ARCHITECTURAL STYLE IN mUMBAI" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7502_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a> </p>
<h3 align="justify">A View of Mumbai’s Skyline</h3>
<p align="justify">My experience began as we pulled into the grand driveway flanked by luscious greenery and tropical flowers. Almost as if we were entering a palace of some sort, the hotel doors opened up to a plush lobby: high ceilings, polished marble flooring, chandelier lamps and lavish furnishing. We were given a warm welcome as friendly staff presented us with multi-colored flower garlands and whizzed our luggage up to our suite.</p>
<p align="justify">Up on our 28th-storey suite, the sprawling urbanscape of Mumbai urfurled upon us through the ceiling-to-floor windows. A tinge of class is reflected in the furnishing: carpeted flooring, flat-screen TV, linen upholstery and teak furniture. Our living area centered around a high-powered massage chair, adding an element of relaxation to our suite. The sleeping area is equally bright, as is the granite-floored bathroom, connected to one another by a glass window. </p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7337.jpg"><img title="View of Mumbai skyline" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="389" alt="View of Mumbai skyline" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7337_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p align="justify">The hotel suite might not be a genuine historical building – it is after all just 3 years old – but it makes up for it with tasteful classic decor and first-world facilities. Zen music played in the background as we drank in the million-dollar-view before us. Rini, the hotel’s PR Manager gave us a brief introduction of the property and led us on a quick tour. </p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7340.jpg"><img title="Our suite at ITC Grand Central Mumbai" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="336" alt="Our suite at ITC Grand Central Mumbai" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7340_thumb.jpg" width="502" border="0" /></a></p>
<h3 align="justify">Old Bombay’s Flair</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7375.jpg"><img title="ITC Grand Central Fountain by niught" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="343" alt="ITC Grand Central Fountain by niught" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7375_thumb.jpg" width="217" align="left" border="0" /></a> From the outside, <a href="http://www.itcwelcomgroup.in/" target="_blank">ITC Grand Central Mumbai</a>’s red brick and pale beige facade adopts the Indo-Saracenic style of Mumbai’s old architecture. This particular style of architecture is unique to Mumbai, created by British architects that have fused elements of Bombay and the Great Britain into today’s historical edifices.</p>
<p align="justify">The hotel’s main 30-storey building is specially designed to imitate the iconic Rajesh Bhai clock tower while its center fountain resembles the Flora Fountain in Mumbai’s historic quarters. The center courtyard is leafy and elegant, blending in to the old world atmosphere that the hotel exudes. A dome-shaped band stand sits on the edge of the hotel’s Eden garden – a perfect setting for summer lounging. </p>
<p align="justify">Back inside the hotel building, the grand lobby and corridors are decked out with paintings of Old Bombay (such as the Victoria Train Terminus) and traditional Kashmir carpets. Aside from the vintage touches, the hotel is designed to accommodate the modern business/luxury traveler. Cozy, spacious lounge chairs fill the lobby area while an even cushier bar – Frederick’s Lounge – set behind the main lift area provide for casual meetings and get-together.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7575.jpg"><img title="canapes served at Point of View bar" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="canapes served at Point of View bar" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7575_thumb.jpg" width="224" align="right" border="0" /></a> Poised on the hotel’s highest floor (30th storey) is the <strong>Point of View bar</strong>, an exclusive suite-residence-only cocktail bar that offers one of the best views in town. As entrance is limited to only VIP guests, you are assured exclusivity and privacy. </p>
<p align="justify">In the day, guests can use the second-level library as a business center. By night, the bar puts on an air of sophistication, enticing guests with its selection of international cocktails and Mediterranean canapés. I personally found the canapés served very refreshing and innovative: smoked tuna rolled around cream cheese resembling a sushi, and savory tuna and mayonnaise topped on a crisy brochette.</p>
<p align="justify">An outdoor terrace allows you to drink in the night lights in the open, or even enjoy a romantic dinner for two (special arrangements can be made). This may just be Mumbai’s most atmospheric rooftop bar.</p>
<h3 align="justify">A Focus on Gastronomy</h3>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7367.jpg"><img title="Chef of Kebabs and Kurries" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="Chef of Kebabs and Kurries" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7367_thumb.jpg" width="224" align="left" border="0" /></a> As a major hotel chain, <a href="http://www.itcwelcomgroup.in/" target="_blank">ITC-Welcomgroup</a> is famous for many things, among which is its well-reputed cuisine. With secret recipes, award-winning chefs and an innovative menu, the hotel’s restaurants have gained quite a reputation for themselves. At ITC Grand Central’s <strong>Kebabs &amp; Kurries</strong>, we sampled some of the best traditional Indian cuisine topped with an extravagant array of local wine to match each dish. </p>
<p align="justify">The restaurant is imposing and majestic in design, with each section made to look like different parts of a fort’s dining hall. Experience dining like a warrior as generous portions of freshly-grilled, steamy red kebabs are served. My personal favorite was the various types of meat cooked in the restaurant’s tandoor – each of them outrageously savory, packing all the spices, smoke and aroma into one light-as-feather slice of meat. What’s best is that diners even get to see how their foods are made, all through the glass windows that separate the kitchen and the dining area.</p>
<p align="justify">The next night, we stepped foot into a starkly different world at the hotel’s fine-dining Chinese restaurant: <strong>Shanghai Club</strong>. Polished dragon carvings, valuable porcelain ware and elegant red lanterns gave the feeling of dining in a sophisticated, modern oriental abode. The food turned out to be even more impressive than the restaurant decor. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7585.jpg"><img title="The Shanghai Club, ITC Grand Central Mumbai" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="The Shanghai Club, ITC Grand Central Mumbai" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7585_thumb.jpg" width="224" align="right" border="0" /></a> Chef Yang Jiayu shared his secrets with me, “I’ve lived in many countries, whipping up authentic Chinese royal cuisine to suit different flavors. Having been in India for 11years, he has a good grasp of what locals and foreigners like and has found a perfect concoction to cater to different diners’ needs.” </p>
<p align="justify">Our first dish, giant prawn fried in dried chilli and garlic, was immaculate in delivering a tangy sensation without overdoing it. My favorite dish of the night was the Xinjiang beef slices – tender, light and savory. Fresh, succulent lobster meat dipped in cheese was another outstanding platter on our dinner table that night.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Each hotel owned by the chain is unique in design, ambiance and style – the only thing that is unanimous for all of them is the food. Restaurant menu, food quality and style are a winning factor for them, so expect to find the country’s best foods at any of the ITC hotels.</strong></p>
<h3 align="justify">Personal Services</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7331.jpg"><img title="Staff of ITC Grand Centreal" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="195" alt="Staff of ITC Grand Centreal" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7331_thumb.jpg" width="291" align="left" border="0" /></a>Perhaps what puts ITC Grand Central at the forefront of the hotel industry is the quality of service it provides. Despite being a massive five-star hotel chain, the warm and friendly staff made us feel very much at ease and comfortable. </p>
<p align="justify">Our butler, Poornam, even made sure we didn’t miss our flight but rechecking it with the airline. We weren’t aware that our flight hours had changed and thanks to her, we managed to catch it on time. Such immaculate service is hard to find elsewhere, and I applaud the hotel for it.</p>
<p align="justify"><em>Disclaimer: My stay was sponsored by the hotel, but all opinions are my own.</em></p>

<p align="justify">In a country like <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2010/07/23/royalty-living-at-the-ashford-castle-hotel/" target="_blank">Ireland</a> – sprawled with patchworks of greenery and rural life &#8211; a driving trip would be the best way to explore its countryside and cities, and get a real taste of the country. As a relatively small nation, driving distances from one attraction/destination to the next are usually not more than 4 hours.</p>
<p align="justify">Our whirlwind journey through Ireland saw us driving from&#160; <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2010/07/13/dublins-top-attractions-voted-by-twitter-travelers/" target="_blank">Dublin</a>, the eastern edge of Ireland to the western end, where <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2010/07/23/royalty-living-at-the-ashford-castle-hotel/" target="_blank">Ashford Castle</a> provided an amazing peek into the area’s history. Our experience in Ireland continued on from County Mayo through stunning prairies-studded County Clare. Weaving past patchworks of natural greenery, we cruised past herds of cows and sheeps, and one traditional Irish cottage after another.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7205.jpg"><img title="green fields of County Clare" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="310" alt="green fields of County Clare" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7205_thumb.jpg" width="541" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Passing Limerick, we veered onto the coastal highway, meandering close to the craggy shoreline. The drive was extremely pleasant as we drank in the stunning views, with the sea breeze in our hair and clear skies above our heads.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7214.jpg"><img title="Coatal view" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="Coatal view" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7214_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7228.jpg"><img title="A small tower on the way to Cliffs of Moher" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="A small tower on the way to Cliffs of Moher" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7228_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a> </p>
<h3>Cliffs of Moher</h3>
<p align="justify">Our next destination was, as everyone said it, a must-see in Ireland. So we marked it out on our map and made it a point to stop at the reputed <strong>Cliffs of Moher</strong>. Stepping close to the edge of the cliffs, we could see the cliff walls plunge straight into the crashing waves – sheer adrenaline! It was definitely one of the most impressive cliff formations I’ve seen, dropping to hundreds of meters in straight vertical cuts – almost as if the Earth had split along that exact crack line.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7238.jpg"><img title="Impressive Cliffs oh Moer" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="Impressive Cliffs oh Moer" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7238_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7252.jpg"><img title="Cliffs of Moher, Ireland" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="Cliffs of Moher, Ireland" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7252_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a> </p>
<h3>Ardmore, Waterford</h3>
<p>Snaking past narrow driveways inland this time, we continued towards our final destination – Ardmore, Waterford. This quiet, isolated corner of Southeastern Ireland is secretly tucked away from the usual tourist trail. This explains why its beaches remain relatively empty and waters surprisingly pristine and clear.</p>
<p>Pulling in at Ardmore Beach, the rain started pouring and we spent the evening chuggin back some Irish beers at a local pub. Although it literally rained the whole time we were there, I could clearly see the allure of Ardmore: a small, historical beach town perfect for doing nothing but unwind.</p>
<h3>Cliff House Hotel</h3>
<p>Besides uncovering a gem of a beach town, our main purpose here was to check out the contemporary and stylish property – <a href="http://www.thecliffhousehotel.com/" target="_blank">Cliff House Hotel.</a> Perched above the craggy cliff tops overlooking Ardmore Bay, the 39-room boutique hotel makes seafront living a rather unique experience. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7314.jpg"><img title="lobby of Cliff House Hotel, Ireland" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="lobby of Cliff House Hotel, Ireland" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7314_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p><strong>Cliff House Hotel</strong>, converted from an old traditional house, is now a Relais and Chateaux property and notably the most tastefully-designed hotel in the region. With a striking all-white exterior and state-of-the-art facilities (the in-room sound system and futuristic sinks), it is&#160; evidently on the edge of hotel technology. But at the same time, its edgy character is softened by the rustic brick-walled interior and teak furnishing.&#160; The hotel’s marine-blue, aubergine and sea green colors combined with antique wooden houseboat decor also creates a vintage cruise ship feel. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7258.jpg"><img title="tn_IMG_7258" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="tn_IMG_7258" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7258_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a>&#160;<a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7304.jpg"><img title="Balconies overlooking Ardmore Bay" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="202" alt="Balconies overlooking Ardmore Bay" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7304_thumb.jpg" width="302" align="left" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p>Every single room in the hotel opens up to a view of the sea. My suite – separated into the living and sleeping areas – is brightly lit by natural sunlight, giving a cheery air to the design. </p>
<p>The most striking feature of the hotel rooms is its impressive bathroom: decked out in blue-green mosaic tiles, stainless steel basins and a futuristic oval-shaped bathtub.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7289.jpg"><img title="tn_IMG_7289" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="tn_IMG_7289" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7289_thumb.jpg" width="224" align="right" border="0" /></a>Eating at Cliff House Hotel is an experience that alone is worth a visit. The hotel’s <strong>House Restaurant</strong> is Ireland’s only One Star Michelin Hotel Restaurant, an honorary title that has its chef to thank for. </p>
<p align="justify"><strong><em>Martijn Kajuiter, the resident chef, whips up innovative eats that evidently retains a touch of old Ireland.</em></strong> </p>
<p align="justify">This starter (pictured on the left) is a concoction of goat cheese, chicken pate and smoked salmon. The dinner special set includes a savory main course: beef fillet accentuated with mushroom gravy. Top notch!</p>
<p>&#160;</p>

<p align="justify">Ireland’s emerald green fields and stunning rural landscapes are studded with historical castles converted into charming and lavish hotels. Among them, Ashford Castle Hotel stands out for its long and significant history, warm Irish hospitality and exclusive location by Lake Cong.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>I’d come to Ireland to uncover the history behind this legendary castle and take a peek at aristocratic living.</strong> Criss-crossing the busy streets of Dublin, Alberto and I were out in the Irish countryside within an hour’s drive. Endless green hills and random cottages flanked both sides of the motorway. Just over 3 hours and we were staring at the ancient Ashford Gate and meandering past the towering Redwoods surrounding the castle.</p>
<h3 align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7159.jpg"><img title="Ashford Castle" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="Ashford Castle" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7159_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a> </h3>
<h3 align="justify">&#160;</h3>
<h3 align="justify">A Regal Welcome</h3>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_7196.jpg"><img title="tn_IMG_7196" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="306" alt="tn_IMG_7196" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/tn_IMG_7196_thumb.jpg" width="205" align="left" border="0" /></a> Only after five minutes of snaking past sparkling greens did the main house of Ashford Castle appear before us. Crossing an ancient stone bridge, the medieval tower at the end of it towered over us, like a solemn greeting. <em>Welcome to the Land of Aristocracy and Knighthood,</em> it seemingly echoed. </p>
<p align="justify">We entered the castle’s main building, only to be greeted by an air of warmth and elegance. In the company of good-humored and genuinely friendly staff, I quickly eased into the casual ambiance, something I had least expected from such an exclusive, high-end property. </p>
<p align="justify">Most of Ashford’s staff have been around for several decades, T.J. Mulcahy, the hotel’s Deputy General Manager told me. It’s no wonder they behave like a family, and the guests, vistors of their family home. Warm hospitality aside, the staff keeps every single detail in mind, including every guest’s last name.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7152.jpg"><img title="Ashford Castle on a sunny day" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="Ashford Castle on a sunny day" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7152_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a> </p>
<h3 align="justify">Historical Role in Ireland’s History</h3>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7070.jpg"><img title="Roof paneling and wooden furnishing in hotel lobby" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="Roof paneling and wooden furnishing in hotel lobby" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7070_thumb.jpg" width="224" align="left" border="0" /></a> Ashford Castle has a significant role in Ireland’s history: it used to be the<strong> Guinness family’s summer residence</strong> centuries ago. The castle is thus a living testimony to the milestones and important events that have taken place in Ireland. </p>
<p align="justify">Its lavish <strong>Connaught Room</strong>, located in the far end of the hotel’s lobby, used to be the family’s dining room. Today, it is decorated with invaluable portrait paintings and china porcelain. The <strong>Drawing Room</strong> too is tastefully embellished with framed artworks from those days, as well as paintings and furniture dating back to the 13th century.</p>
<p align="justify">And that’s not just it. The intricately-crafted roof paneling and exquisite wooden furnishing in the hotel lobby are original, dating back to the 1200s. Although the main castle building was extended in the 1700s and later in the 1900s, designs and layout were kept to fit the castle’s overall aesthetics.&#160; </p>
<h3 align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7068.jpg"><img title="Connaught Room" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="Connaught Room" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7068_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a></h3>
<h3 align="justify"><strong></strong></h3>
<h3 align="justify">Suites Fit for Royalty </h3>
<p align="justify">Back in my suite, I was astounded to find an inviting view of Lake Cong before me. The living room and sleeping area are separated by a door, and both rooms were equipped with TV and plush furnishing. Decorated with velvet upholstery, floral-patterned wall papers and carpeted flooring, the suite exudes a kind of sophistication only fit for royalty. Our bathroom, the size of my apartment room back at home, is a classic example of indulgence.</p>
<p align="justify">In the State Rooms, guests can snuggle in their four-poster bed, blanketed with burgundy beddings and white linen. These rooms, the best in the hotels, all look out into the expansive lake and fountain.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7191.jpg"><img title="Ashford Castle State Room" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="Ashford Castle State Room" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7191_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a></p>
<h3 align="justify">Award-winning Cuisine</h3>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7143.jpg"><img title="George V Dining Room, Ashford Castle" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="362" alt="George V Dining Room, Ashford Castle" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7143_thumb.jpg" width="242" align="left" border="0" /></a> And of course, a hotel fit for royalty has to dish up cuisine of world-class standards. Having recently nabbed the <strong>Best Chef Award 2010</strong> (not his first time), resident chef Stephen Matz immaculately prepares modern cuisine with a traditional Irish twist. </p>
<p align="justify">I had the chance to sample the special dinner menu at the hotel&#8217;s in-house restaurant, <strong>George V Dining Room.</strong> As a highly-acclaimed restaurant in Ireland, George V is one of the most visited culinary establishments in the area and is reputed for its innovative flavors.</p>
<p align="justify">First dish on the menu: crisp local lamb fillet dipped in sun-dried tomatoes. At first glance, the dish looked simple and fairly minimalistic. But one bite and my mouth was assaulted by an explosion of flavors. Not one to exaggerate, I think I almost had a food orgasm right there. The second dish whetted my appetite more, as the chicken consommé warmed my stomach in preparation for the main course. The protagonist emerged to exceed all my expectations: the thick&#160; but tender beef medallion was wrapped in a flurry of soft mashed potato and drenched in a savory sauce, a magical concoction for the carnivorous.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7134.jpg"><img title="Medallion Beef Fillet at Ashford Castle inhouse restaurant" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="372" alt="Medallion Beef Fillet at Ashford Castle inhouse restaurant" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tn_IMG_7134_thumb.jpg" width="556" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p align="justify">At George V Dining Room, the experienced supervisor, Martin Gibbons shared with me his life story. His grandfather had worked for the Guinness family, and now he is continuing his legacy by dedicating his life to the Ashford Castle. Having worked here for 36 years, his passion for the hotel and its cuisine shines through the sparkles in his eyes. Like its staff, Ashford Castle Hotel is deeply rooted to its monumental past and looks on to its bright future.</p>

<p align="justify">The two words ‘boutique’ and ‘cave’ rarely come together in one sentence, but <strong><a href="http://www.yunak.com/cappadociahotelrooms.php" target="_blank">Yunak Evleri</a></strong> manages to pull it off rather well. With impeccable service, exquisite furnishing and a hint of rustic <em>au naturel</em> ambiance,&#160; Yunak Evleri adds special meaning to one’s travel experience. </p>
<p align="justify">Blending nature and interior design into one perfect setting, Yunak Evleri sets the golden standards for cave hotels in <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2010/04/17/cappadocia-land-of-fairy-chimneys-and-cave-cities/" target="_blank">Cappadocia, Turkey</a>. Having first opened its doors to guests 12 years ago, this <a href="http://www.yunak.com/" target="_blank">luxury cave hotel</a> was one of the pioneering hotels to be set in a genuine cave. Since then, it has maintained its reputation as one of the best cave hotels in Cappadocia.</p>
<h3 align="justify">Preserving Environment and History</h3>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4219.jpg"><img title="Exterior of Yunak Evleri" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="Exterior of Yunak Evleri" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4219_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p>Carved right out of towering cliff faces, these caves date back to the <em>5th and 6th century</em> when Cappadocia was shaped by works of nature. These caves, rich in history and heritage, are now protected by the Turkish authorities. This is why although they are renovated and decorated with plush furnishing at Yunak Evleri, the caves are still kept in their original structure. Any sort of reform or overhaul is not allowed by law.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4234.jpg"><img title="Cave hotel exterior" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px; border-right-width: 0px" height="413" alt="Cave hotel exterior" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4234_thumb.jpg" width="277" align="right" border="0" /></a>Caves form a quintessential part of Cappadocia’s landscapes – with magical fairy chimneys and mystical caves dotted all over its winding valleys and sprawling terrain. </p>
<p><em><strong>To get an opportunity to actually sleep in a genuine cave inevitably makes one feel privileged.</strong></em></p>
<p><strong><em>And it’s not just a simple cave, it is fitted with lavish rustic furnishing, a right dose of traditional Turkish decor and a tinge of luxury.</em></strong></p>
<p>At Yunak Evleri, it is easy to see how much attention they pay to details, and how much care they provide towards conserving the environment. </p>
<h3 align="justify">Lavish Greek Mansion</h3>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4224.jpg"><img title="Main hotel lobby" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="372" alt="Main hotel lobby" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4224_thumb.jpg" width="556" border="0" /></a></p>

Housed in a 19th century Greek mansion, the main building exudes a kind of sophisticated charm.</p>
<p>Within the stone building, cozy meeting ooms provide a soothing atmosphere for some lounging in the evening. The music room has a wide variety of CDs you can borrow and the TV room is decked out in plush Turkish cushions and a million-dollar view of the surrounding cliffs. </p>
<p>Adjacent to the stone mansion is a rooftop terrace that is strewn with thick, comfortable pillows come summer. Candle-light dinners are held here.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3 align="justify">Luxury Cave Suites</h3>
<p align="justify">A labyrinth of narrow cobbled stone paths lead to the hotel’s 30 cave rooms. Each room is tastefully designed in Ottoman style and decorated with old kilim carpets and wooden chests. Polished teak flooring and handcrafted furniture give it a tinge of subtle elegance. Some of the best rooms are located a short climb away; with an unobstructed panorama of the Urgup mountain cliffs. </p>
<p align="justify"><em><strong>What’s special about the rooms is the television, or rather, the lack of it. </strong></em>Hotel manager, Abdullah Inal tells me the purpose of not having a television set in the rooms is to allow guests to completely unwind and soak in their surroundings. Instead, guests can chill out to calm, soothing jazz music and enjoy the alluring view within the comfort of their own room.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4203.jpg"><img title="Standard twin room" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="Standard twin room" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4203_thumb.jpg" width="501" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p align="justify"><strong><em>Out of its selection of cave rooms, the massive suite has to be a honeymooner’s dream come true.</em></strong>&#160; I had the opportunity to stay at its multi-chambered deluxe suite. Besides the massive living area, the gorgeous marble bathroom fitted with a jacuzzi jet-bath was enough to make me dream of coming back again with my other half. The sleeping area is cozily tucked behind the living area, furnished simply with a cushy double bed, a teak chest box and a rocking chair.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4399.jpg"><img title="Yunak Evleri suite" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="375" alt="Yunak Evleri suite" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4399_thumb.jpg" width="561" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4390.jpg"><img title="Sleeping area within its suite" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="Sleeping area within its suite" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4390_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p align="justify">The hotel’s restaurant, situated adjacent to the stone mansion, is an atmospheric one. With classical music playing in the background and the fireplace burning, it sets you in the right mood for some romance. Its Victorian-style interior is enhanced by the hardwood ceiling, stone walls and velvet upholstery. </p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4261.jpg"><img title="tn_IMG_4261" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="tn_IMG_4261" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4261_thumb.jpg" width="501" border="0" /></a> </p>
<h3 align="justify">Prices</h3>
<p align="justify">The hotel caters to the well-heeled traveler, with room rates starting from US$130 (single room) to $230 (suite) per night. I’m accustomed to budget hostels or B&amp;B, being a shoestring traveler, but for such an exotic setting and world-class furnishing, I think the price is rather reasonable.</p>
<h3 align="justify">Location</h3>
<p>Yunak Evleri is situated in the town of Ürgüp, the main tourist base in Cappadocia. In contrast to Goreme, Ürgüp is calmer in terms of tourism and has a more quaint feel to it. Just a 5-minute downhill walk from the hotel is the center of Ürgüp, where most restaurants and shops are located. With tour operators and public buses easily available, it’s a convenient base for exploring Cappadocia.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4282.jpg"><img title="Town of Urgup" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="Town of Urgup" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/tn_IMG_4282_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p><em>*Disclaimer: my stay at Yunak Evleri was sponsored by the hotel, it does not affect my opinions in any way.</em></p>

<p align="justify">The capital of <strong>Czech Republic</strong> in Central <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/category/by-country/europe/" target="_blank">Europe</a> gives travelers the rare opportunity of traveling back in time – back to the days when shiny-armored knights and corseted ladies roamed the streets. Wrought iron gates and clock towers set the scene for nobles and horse-driven carriages. These days, Prague still retains its medieval characteristics, charming visitors with its ancient monuments and gothic architecture. </p>
<p align="justify">Our last visit to Prague in summer, we saw a city blooming in vivid colors and sizzling hoards of tourists with sunshine. This winter, we revisited Prague to see a different side of it – clad with a coat of cool air and smelling of fairy-tale whimsicalness. Let our photos bring you through Prague’s gorgeous streets and see if you can feel that ancient air.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/ClockTowerSquareatnight.jpg"><img title="Clock Tower Square at night" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="376" alt="Clock Tower Square at night" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/ClockTowerSquareatnight_thumb.jpg" width="562" border="0" /></a>&#160;&#160; </p>
<p align="justify">The clock tower that stands in the city’s main square attracts visitors from all over, with its magical chime and cockadoo rooster. At Christmas, the square is completely lit up with festive mood and a busy Christmas market. The twin towers at the other end of the square fills up the skyline of Prague.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/ViewofPragueCastlebytheriver.jpg"><img title="View of Prague Castle by the river" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-bottom: 0px" height="320" alt="View of Prague Castle by the river" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/ViewofPragueCastlebytheriver_thumb.jpg" width="557" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p align="justify">By night, the Prague Castle glows in a golden shimmer. This view, as seen from the Charles Bridge, is one of the best in the city.</p>

<p align="justify">This is the panoramic view of the city as seen from Prague Castle. The city is sprawling, stretching from the old town to the commercial area. But the main allure of Prague lies in its old quarters.</p>

<p>Prague Castle is separated from the old town by the Vitara River, several scenes from Mission Impossible and the Bourne Identity were shot along the river bank. </p>

I confess: I’ve become quite a volcano buff after seeing hot molten lava flowing off Guatemala’s most active volcano, <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2009/11/09/climbing-the-most-active-volcano-in-guatemala/" target="_blank">Volcan Pacaya</a>. </p>
<p align="justify">There’s no sign of red burning lava flowing here, the volcano has after all been dormant for the past three hundred years. But there’s more to Lanzarote than bubbling lava. The volcanic activities have also created some of the island’s most interesting nature spots in the form of&#160; outlandish formations, oddly-coloured lagoons and savagely wild beaches.</p>

<h3 align="justify">Timanfaya National Park</h3>
<p align="justify">There’s nothing more thrilling for a volcano buff than seeing the remnants from an earth-shaking eruption: still covering the entire Timanfaya National Park with black, tar-like, earth bowels. Driving through the volcanic area, you’ll find yourself in the midst of ashes that stack up as tall as a tour bus, and grazing the top of a volcano crater. </p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tn_IMG_2685.jpg"><img title="tn_IMG_2685" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="tn_IMG_2685" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tn_IMG_2685_thumb.jpg" width="501" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p align="justify">In the 1700s, the fiery volcano had exploded into life, spewing deadly lava, killing many and nearly destroying life on Lanzarote. Today, it is one of the most visited spots in Lanzarote, and rightfully so, with a rich geographical value that comes with it. The Restaurant El Diablo, once again designed by Cesar Manrique, sits at the park’s visitor center.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tn_IMG_2664.jpg"><img title="tn_IMG_2664" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="tn_IMG_2664" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tn_IMG_2664_thumb.jpg" width="501" border="0" /></a> A demonstration outside El Diablo restaurant</p>
<h3 align="justify">El Golfo</h3>
<p align="justify">The volcanic black sand sprawling across a backdrop of edgy rocky cliffs is the setting for several futuristic films. <em>El Charco de los Clicos</em>, a lime-green lagoon creates a stark contrast to the sea and surroundings. The lagoon gets its greenish colour from the algae that grows within the lake.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tn_IMG_2629.jpg"><img title="tn_IMG_2629" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="tn_IMG_2629" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tn_IMG_2629_thumb.jpg" width="501" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p align="center"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tn_IMG_2589.jpg"><img title="tn_IMG_2589" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="tn_IMG_2589" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tn_IMG_2589_thumb.jpg" width="501" border="0" /></a>&#160;<em>El Charco de los Clicos</em></p>
<h3 align="justify">Los Hervidores</h3>
<p align="justify">Along the coast from El Golfo, the enchanting cliffs of Los Hervidores are a collection of naturally formed caves and inlets, a result of the tumultous waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Gazing down at the blowholes in the volcanic rocks, you can spot the island’s semi-precious mineral Olivine in abundance.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tn_IMG_2564.jpg"><img title="tn_IMG_2564" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="tn_IMG_2564" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tn_IMG_2564_thumb.jpg" width="501" border="0" /></a> </p>
<h3 align="justify">Cuevas de los Verdes</h3>
<p align="justify">This extensive underground volcanic tunnel, running over six kilometers long, is a result of the eruptive activity of nearby La Corona Volcano. The unique extra-terrestial-like interior of the tunnel awes visitors with sky-high ceilings and lava channels. Potholes are filled with waters so calm you can see the tunnel’s roof reflected immaculately on its surface.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tn_IMG_2322.jpg"><img title="tn_IMG_2322" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: block; border-left-width: 0px; float: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-right-width: 0px" height="335" alt="tn_IMG_2322" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tn_IMG_2322_thumb.jpg" width="501" border="0" /></a> </p>
<h3 align="justify">Playa Papagayo</h3>
<p align="justify">This assemblage of coves and virgin beaches can only be reached via a dirt road or hike – which perhaps is the reason why they are kept in pristine conditions. The crystal clear waters and variety of hiking opportunities on the cliff’s edge makes the stretch of naturally formed beaches some of the best on the island. </p>

<h3>Where to Stay</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.hotels4u.com/hotels/los-zocos-club-resort.aspx" target="_blank">Los Zocos Club Resort</a> offers all-inclusive packages with a variety of facilities suitable for couples and families. I particularly liked the fully-equipped apartment style accommodation.&#160; Just 150m from the beach, it’s located in Costa Teguise, one of the calmer towns on the island. Expect tranquility, nature and fun. </p>
