<p align="justify">From the spiritual grounds of Borobudur, we headed further North into the marshy floors of an active volcanic complex. With the initial idea of returning back South, we’d changed our plans after meeting this energetic travel-savvy couple, Tina and Daniel, who decided to join us for the roadtrip. With our new-found travel mates, we geared up for some impromptu and adventurous fun. Off we went, deep into the highlands of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieng_Plateau" target="_blank">Dieng Plateau</a>, on our sturdy rented truck. We were in for some wild adventure.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050428.jpg"><img title="Rows of green fields" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-bottom: 0px" height="372" alt="Rows of green fields" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050428_thumb.jpg" width="551" border="0" /></a></p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050370.jpg"><img title="Landscape" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="212" alt="Landscape" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050370_thumb.jpg" width="282" align="left" border="0" /></a>What was supposed to be a 1-hour smooth ride to the highlands, or so we thought, (since our hostel receptionist had assured us it wasn’t far) turned out to be a 3-hour hair-raising steep drive along winding paths hugging slopes of terrace rice fields. One wrong move, and we would be plunging down towards the rolling green land.</p>
<p align="justify"> Fortunately, with a sense of adventure, great company and Alberto’s insane driving skills, we made it past harrowing traffic and flimsy wooden bridges. Road safety sure wasn’t on the local drivers’ top priority.</p>
<h3 align="justify">Dieng’s Emerald Landscape</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050442.jpg"><img title="Amidst the clouds" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="402" alt="Amidst the clouds" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050442_thumb.jpg" width="227" align="left" border="0" /></a>Passing through endless plots of beautifully-laid terraced fields, it was difficult not to get distracted by the stunning agricultural masterpieces laying ahead. Driving past the landscape of Dieng, one could easily get lost amongst the criss-crossed rows of vegetations and crops. Dieng might just be Asia’s answer to Tuscany – nature’s work of art.</p>
<p>Climbing up the caldera walls, temperatures start dropping as the wind outside transformed from hot humid air to crisp cool breeze.</p>
<p align="justify">Stopping by the viewing point at the peak of the Dieng, we found ourselves floating in the dreamy mist. Staring down at magically strewn paddy fields, they glistened in various shades of green. The clouds slowly moved into our sight, and soon, we could barely see our fingers. We were literally in the clouds.</p>
<p align="justify">&#160;</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050392.jpg"><img title="where the farmers work" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-bottom: 0px" height="362" alt="where the farmers work" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050392_thumb.jpg" width="482" border="0" /></a></p>
<h3 align="justify">Religious Abode of Hindu Gods </h3>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050423.jpg"><img title="Arjuna Temple" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="335" alt="Arjuna Temple" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050423_thumb.jpg" width="252" align="left" border="0" /></a>‘Dieng’ comes from the word ‘<em>Di-Hyang’</em>, which means ‘<strong>Abode of the Gods’</strong> . At almost 2000m above sea level, its misty and dreamy location fused with out-of-this-world effusions, makes it an auspicious spot for religious purposes. 8 small Hindu temples built in the 7th and 8th century (oldest Hindu temple in Central Java) are found here, in the caldera of the Dieng Volcano. </p>
<p align="justify">Compared to other renown monuments, these hindu temples were not impressive in terms of architecture, but their sheer presence in the foggy realm of the highlands never ceased to captivate many.</p>
<p align="justify">&#160;</p>
<h3 align="justify">Sulphur-coloured Crater Lake: Telaga Warna</h3>
<p align="justify">Meandering up the caldera walls of the volcanic complex, the first stop we made was at the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogor_Regency">Telaga Warna</a>. Oozing strong sulphuric smell, the crater lake stood in its own glory as its emerald-turqoise beauty glowed proudly. With the tall volcano looming in the background, the view was picture-perfect.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050395.jpg"><img title="Telaga Warna" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-bottom: 0px" height="392" alt="Telaga Warna" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050395_thumb.jpg" width="522" border="0" /></a></p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050400.jpg"><img title="Four of us" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="182" alt="Four of us" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050400_thumb.jpg" width="242" align="left" border="0" /></a>Meeting fellow travellers on the road always added colors and different perspective to our travels. Tina and Daniel were a great pair, making jokes and sharing their tales with us. We would have missed out the gem of Dieng Plateau if not for them.</p>
<p align="justify">&#160;</p>
<p align="justify">&#160;</p>
<h3>Steaming hot lake: Sikidang Crater</h3>
<p align="justify">Dieng has been dominated by phreatic eruptions and geothermal activities (mud pools and hot springs). Its emission of carbon dioxide has also resulted in the death of locals in the past. As we throdded on the marshy ground, the smell of sulphur was overwhelming. Bubbles of mudpools could be seen on the ground as fumes spread across the hot boiling volcanic lake. Surrounded by a flimsy wooden railing, the heat from the lake could be felt metres away.</p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050403.jpg"><img title="Mud pools" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-bottom: 0px" height="325" alt="Mud pools" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050403_thumb.jpg" width="432" border="0" /></a>&#160;<a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050406.jpg"><img title="Sikidang Crater" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-bottom: 0px" height="377" alt="Sikidang Crater" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050406_thumb.jpg" width="502" border="0" /></a></p>
<h3 align="justify">Local Food in the Dieng</h3>
<p align="justify">The Dieng Village was a scrubby little town with a couple of rundown hostels and grocery stores selling bare necessities. Instead, we found a tiny culinary haven right by the Sikidang Crater. Tucked at the carpark was a food market run by the Dieng natives, with colorful fried food on display. Food hawkers are seen throwing chunks of potatoes and yams into a wok full of steaming oil. Draining the oil off after the chunks turn golden, these smiley ladies sprinkle flaming red powder over the crispy snack. We dipped into them like hungry animals as the ladies laughed in amusement. </p>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050419.jpg"><img title="Food hawkers" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="208" alt="Food hawkers" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050419_thumb.jpg" width="277" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050422.jpg"><img title="Deep-fried yam" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="208" alt="Deep-fried yam" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/68d29cec90e1_CCD2/tn_P1050422_thumb.jpg" width="277" border="0" /></a> </p>

We were right, this part of Java had us finding ourselves spiritually and even stumbling upon some pleasant surprises, one after another.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050310.jpg"><img title="Stupas of the Borobudur" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-bottom: 0px" height="362" alt="Stupas of the Borobudur" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050310-thumb.jpg" width="482" border="0" /></a> </p>
<p align="justify">Driving up North to the sacred lands of Borobudur, we passed through endless emerald green rice terraces and small Hindu temples along the way. The World’s biggest Buddhist monument was built in the 9th century, and decorated with 504 Buddha statues. The Borobudur oozes spirituality from the numerous Hindu relic sculptures and countless Buddha statues, and the mountains far in the distance.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050255.jpg"><img title="Borobudur from the base" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="227" alt="Borobudur from the base" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050255-thumb.jpg" width="302" align="left" border="0" /></a>Unlike other temples built on flat land, the Borobudur was built on a hill, an elevated area between two twin volcanoes and two lakes. This explains the stunning view of the natural landscape surrounding the Buddhist temple.</p>
<p>Entering the grounds of the Borobudur, we were greeted by luscious greenery, and and an atmosphere of a royal garden. </p>
<p>Ascending the stairs of the giant monument, I constantly turned around to take in the beauty of the entire Kedu Plains landscape. Overlooking criss-crossed terrace fields, and tall coconut trees, the Borobudur and the mountains surrounding it were one.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, Indonesia’s most visited monument is swamped with tourists, especially in the evening during sunset. We fought through the scorching afternoon heat to avoid the crowd, and managed to have it all for ourselves. Herds of students came pouring in towards 4pm for the cooler weather, so try to avoid that time!</p>
<h3 align="justify">Architecture of the Ancient Shrine</h3>
<p align="justify"><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050318.jpg"><img title="Statues of Buddha within the stupas" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="402" alt="Statues of Buddha within the stupas" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050318-thumb.jpg" width="302" align="right" border="0" /></a>Built as a shrine for the Lord Buddha, the Borobudur is a single large stupa (bell-shaped structure containing Buddhist relics). The foundation is a square, and the entire monument consists of 9 platforms. On the upper platforms, there are 72 stupas surrounding one large central stupa. Each of them contains a Buddha statue within.</p>
<p>Standing in a Muslim country, it is unfathomable that such a majestic Buddhist monument could withstand centuries of evolution. Borobudur was believed to have been abandoned following the Javanese conversion to Islam. </p>
<p>One could easily feel the rich religious beliefs of the pilgrims who had journeyed to this sacred land.</p>
<h3>Reliefs on the Walls of Borobudur</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050265.jpg"><img title="Reliefs on the walls" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="208" alt="Reliefs on the walls" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050265-thumb.jpg" width="402" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050279.jpg"><img title="Gargoyle-shaped water spout" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="202" alt="Gargoyle-shaped water spout" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050279-thumb.jpg" width="152" align="left" border="0" /></a> Reliefs telling legends and ancient tales cover the facades and corridors of the Buddhist shrine. Paying tribute to Buddha, these reliefs depict the biography of Buddha, while some tell the story of Buddha’s former lives. </p>
<p>You might not be able to interpret the stories completely, but a wave of holy spiritual uplifting energy might just hit you if you learn to immerse yourself in their beliefs.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>Where to Stay</h3>
<p>We found a quiet peace of heaven at <strong><a href="http://pondoktingal.ourfamily.com/" target="_blank">Pondok Tingal Guesthouse</a></strong>. Nestled in the wild foliage, the guesthouse is a typical Javanese Losmen (homestay), built with rattan in a simple local style. With a family room (no aircon but spacious living room and double bed) at only 100,000Rp (US$9), it is affordable yet offering a genuine experience for the budget travelers. There are not many choices for accomodation in the town of Borobudur, with a high-end hotel in the grounds of the temple, and several other budget guesthouses.<a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050238.jpg"><img title="Garden of Pondok Tingal" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="197" alt="Garden of Pondok Tingal" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050238-thumb.jpg" width="272" align="left" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050234.jpg"><img title="Living area of the family room" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="348" alt="Living area of the family room" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050234-thumb.jpg" width="262" align="right" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p10502341.jpg"></a></p>

<p>&#160; </p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<p><em><strong></strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong></strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong>An unbelievably sacred site, this is an amazing spot to visit especially if you’re looking for some inner peace and tranquility. But beware of the crowds, they might just spoil your peace of mind!</strong></em></p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050321.jpg"><img title="Buddha reveals itself" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-bottom: 0px" height="469" alt="Buddha reveals itself" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tn-p1050321-thumb.jpg" width="352" border="0" /></a>&#160;</p>

<p>It all started when Alberto began asking me questions, on why Asians always eat with our mouths full, or why we never bother asking ‘how are you?’. I was always intrigued by how he saw us as Asians. Even as a foreigner who’s been throttling in and out of Asia for the past 5 years, he is still amazed by the stark differences and just how odd some of our behavior would be deemed in the western world. This article is basically inspired by him, to showcase some of our most Bizarre cultural habits.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/image10.png"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Japanese slurping noodles" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/image-thumb9.png" border="0" alt="Japanese slurping noodles" width="502" height="377" /></a></p>
<p>Anyone who’s been to China would have seen the locals spitting openly on the streets, or even indoors in nice restaurants. It’s quite a hideous sight, and you just can’t stop wondering why they incessantly do that.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/nospitting.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Nospitting" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/nospitting-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="Nospitting" width="442" height="294" /></a></p>
<p>In many Asian countries, it is <em><strong>typical for people to grow long fingernails</strong></em>, especially on their small pinkie. Wanna know why? <a href="http://www.bootsnall.com/articles/09-03/7-most-bizarre-asian-cultural-habits.html">Read my article here.</a></p>
<p>And from Japan to India, it is a standard practice to <em><strong>remove shoes at home in most of the Asian countries</strong></em>. Again, there are always some cultural beliefs that lead to such practices.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/removingshoes.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="removingshoes" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/removingshoes-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="removingshoes" width="442" height="297" /></a></p>
<p>From the <strong><em>Japanese’ habit of slurping noodles loudly</em></strong>, to the <strong><em>Chinese’s spitting habit along the streets</em></strong>, I bring you on a journey through the weird and bizarre Asian customs that might just make you feel, tad bit, odd.</p>

<p>Many friends have been scratching their heads for ideas on short weekend getaways from Singapore. We are after all very fortunate to be next-door neighbors with the lush tropical beaches of Malaysia and Indonesia. But thanks to over-developed tourism, most of these ‘ex-paradises’ are now crowded and touristy. Forget <em>Bali, Phuket and Bintan</em>, let&#8217;s find somewhere new and refreshing. Here are some alternative spots in our vicinity, perfect for a short weekend escapade!</p>
<h3>MALAYSIA</h3>
<h3>1.   Pulau Rawa</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.rawa.com.my/" target="_blank">This secluded island</a> is just a short boat-ride away from Mersing, the port where many embark on boast to nearby islands. Unlike neighbouring touristy Tioman, many are surprised to find the clear, turqoise waters and rare tranquility on this stunning island.</p>
<p><strong><img class="aligncenter" title="Pulau Rawa, Malaysia" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3093/2802009668_6d448d8470_z.jpg?zz=1" alt="" width="640" height="480" /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kgsudhi/2802009668/in/photostream/" target="_blank">Sudheer KG</a></em></span></strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>2.   Port Dickson</h3>
<p>Not many tourist/traveler visit this quaint part of Malaysia, so be sure to get some local taste. <a href="http://www.avillion-portdickson.com/" target="_blank">The Avillion</a> is an amazing resort consisting of water villas built on stilts over water. Although the murky water is not the pride of Port Dickson, the Avillion still offers a great experience with its romantic settings -  a 4-poster bed and opened-rooftop shower.</p>
<p><a href="http://photos.wildjunket.com/Asia/Malaysia/Port-Dickson/i-HdHX8zK/0/M/P1040819-copia-M.jpg"><img class="aligncenter" title="Port Dickson Avillion" src="http://photos.wildjunket.com/Asia/Malaysia/Port-Dickson/i-HdHX8zK/0/M/P1040819-copia-M.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="338" /></a></p>
<h3>3.   <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2008/12/30/diving-the-waters-of-sipadan-borneo/" target="_blank">Sipadan</a></h3>
<p>Divers alert! This amazing world heritage site situated in the Malaysian part of <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/category/by-country/asia/borneo/" target="_blank">Borneo</a> is packed full of outrageous dive sites and marine life. With tornadoes of barracudas, hammerhead sharks and hawksbill turtles, there is nowhere closer to haven then in Borneo. Diving is a little more expensive especially at Sipadan, but nearby islands like Mabul and Kapalai also have vibrant marine life. </p>
<p><a href="http://photos.wildjunket.com/Asia/Borneo/Sipadan/i-cGSdkF5/1/M/IMG3399-M.jpg"><img class="aligncenter" title="snorkeling in Sipadan" src="http://photos.wildjunket.com/Asia/Borneo/Sipadan/i-cGSdkF5/1/M/IMG3399-M.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="450" /></a></p>
<h3>4.   Pulau Perhentian</h3>
<p>Next door neighbour to the renown Pulau Redang, this island is still surprisingly rustic and quiet, away from the public’s attention. With some of the most beautiful beaches and marine life in Asia, it is perfect for dive enthusiasts. You get to see baby sharks and turtles while snorkelling. Try out small-scale cheap huts – the locals will assure you the best time. </p>
<p><img class="aligncenter" title="Perhentian, Malaysia" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2205/2056190157_1e496076aa_z.jpg?zz=1" alt="" width="640" height="480" /><em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/slapers/2056190157/" target="_blank">Paul Arps</a></em></p>
<h3>INDONESIA</h3>
<h3>5.   Nikoi Island</h3>
<p>Just 2.5hours away from Singapore, a stone throw from Bintan, <a href="http://www.nikoi.com/" target="_blank">Nikoi</a> is almost unheard of amongst Singaporeans. A tiny island dominated by only 1 single rustic and luxurious resort, it is secluded and private. Perfect for a lovers’ hideaway. It comes with a price of course, at S$300 a night for a 1-bedroom bungalow(min. 2 night’s stay).</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>6.   Gili Trawangan</h3>
<p>A tiny island off <a href="http://www.lombok-network.com/" target="_blank">Lombok</a> (a great alternative to touristy Bali), the Gili islands are like a god-sent. Sparkling clear waters, and hey, a very laid-back style with signs that say <strong>‘Mushrooms for sale’</strong> everywhere. Looks like that’s the best place to get literally<em> </em><em> high</em> in Asia.. <a href="http://www.traveljournals.net/pictures/17468.html" target="_blank"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Gili Trawangan" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/image06.jpg" alt="Gili Trawangan" width="502" height="360" border="0" /></a> <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">How to:</span></strong> <a href="http://www.silkair.com/mbe/en_UK/" target="_blank">SilkAir</a> flies direct from Singapore to Lombok, then 2 hours by <a href="http://www.bwsbali.com/gili-islands/index.php?gclid=CIPC0Iim-ZgCFQ8upAodJXSBlw" target="_blank">fast boat</a> to the Gili islands.</p>
<h3>7.   Manado</h3>
<p>Now that budget airline <a href="http://airasia.com/site/sg/en/home.jsp" target="_blank">AirAsia</a> has new routes to Manado, divers and beachcombers have a new playground to frolic in. A hideaway that is only known amongst water sports aficionados, Manado has one of the 10 top dive sites in the world. What’s best, its geographical location at the Northern end of Sulawesi blesses it with Mount Mahawu. <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/kaufik/171241285/in/set-812648/" target="_blank"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Bunakken island, Manado" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/image07.jpg" alt="Bunakken island, Manado" width="504" height="316" border="0" /></a> Photo by: <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/kaufik/171241285/in/set-812648/" target="_blank">Kaufik Anril</a> <strong> </strong><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">How to</span></strong>: AirAsia flies from Kuala Lumpur to Manado at onlyS$200.</p>
<h3><strong>THAILAND</strong><strong> </strong></h3>
<h3>8.   Krabi</h3>
<p>Most nature-lovers escape to Krabi, as a quieter option to Phuket. With waterfalls and hiking trails, it has more to offer than Phuket’s pumping music and party crowd. Rent a jeep to drive inland, and kayak through the limestone caves. Check out the exclusive <a href="http://sikao.anantara.com/rooms.aspx" target="_blank">Antara resort at Si Kao</a> that has a zen decor and surroundings, putting your mind at ease. <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/image08.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Krabi" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/image08.jpg" alt="Krabi" width="502" height="329" border="0" /></a> <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>How to</strong></span>: <a href="http://www.silkair.com/mbe/en_UK/" target="_blank">Silkair</a> flies direct from Singapore to Krabi.</p>
<h3>9.   Huahin</h3>
<p>Its close proximity to Bangkok also means cheap flights from Singapore (as low as S$80). A quiet coastal town that allows you to step back into the past, stop for a roadside Pat Thai and enjoy a massage on the beach. <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/miek37/2493905243/" target="_blank"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Hua hin" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/image09.jpg" alt="Hua hin" width="502" height="323" border="0" /></a> Photo by: <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/miek37/2493905243/" target="_blank">Miek</a> <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">How to:</span></strong> A <a href="http://www.thailand-huahin.com/bangkok-huahin-train-timetables.htm" target="_blank">short train ride from Bangkok</a> &#8211; 2nd class seat on the Express train costs 380 Baht (S$15) or catch a 3-hour <a href="http://www.thailand-huahin.com/bangkok-huahin-bus-timetables.htm" target="_blank">bus ride from the Southern terminal</a> (160 Baht=S$7)</p>
<h3>10.   Koh Tao</h3>
<p>As most of the thai beaches have been commercialised and dominated by tourists, this is an up and coming island that is yet to be tinted by tourists. Getting to Koh Tao can be complicating, but this also means a quiet and unexplored island. <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/image10.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Koh Tao" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/gallery/misc/image10.jpg" alt="Koh Tao" width="502" height="402" border="0" /></a> <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>How to:</strong></span> <a href="http://www.bkkair.co.th " target="_blank">Bangkok airways</a> flies from Singapore to Koh Samui, and then transfer to a boat. An alternative and more scenic route is an <a href="http://www.kohtao.com/howtoget.php" target="_blank">overnight train from Bangkok to Chumporn</a> (Express #85 ). &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212; <strong><em>There, all the best-kept secrets! <p>As the most romantic day of the year is approaching fast, it’s time to dig up some hot ideas to romance your loved one. Modern urbanites these days might find it quite a bit of a commercialized gimmick for romantic fools to empty their pockets and boost the economy; I’m just one of those fools who love to be swept off my feet and completely indulge in romance.</p>
<p>Here are some of my favorite ways of spending Valentine’s:</p>
<h3>1. Cruising the canals of Venice, Italy</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2007/06/26/venice-enchantment/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Rialto canal in Venice" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-foto0161june07.jpg" border="0" alt="Rialto canal in Venice" width="442" height="332" /></a></p>
<p>Nothing beats the whimsical and dreamy atmosphere  in Venice – you breathe, smell and soak in romance. I surprised Alberto on his birthday in 2007 with a <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2007/06/26/venice-enchantment/" target="_blank">weekend trip to Venice</a> – of course, even guys fall for that!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2007/06/26/venice-enchantment/"><img style="display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="Piazza San Marco" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-foto0172june07.jpg" border="0" alt="Piazza San Marco" width="202" height="152" align="left" /></a> Taking a <a href="http://www.isango.com/italy-tours/venice-tours/venice-gondola-ride">Venice gondola ride </a>through the Canals (although that is costs 60euros for a ride – budgeted travelers like us could take the 4euros <em>Vaporetto</em> instead.) or people-watching in one of the <a href="http://www.simonseeks.com/travel-guides/restaurants-venice-where-save-and-where-splash-out__118667">Venice restaurants </a> at  <em>Piazza San Marco</em> are the best ways to fire up your passion. Accommodation can be way costly, check out small hotels in the Venetian countryside that cost half the price and only a bus ride away. We stayed in the <a href="http://www.villadori.com/" target="_blank">Hotel Villa Dori</a>, with room rates of 77euros per night, and Venetian styled 4-poster beds. Definitely true Valentine’s style!</p>
<h3>2. Sunset at the Alhambra Palace – Granada, Spain</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2007/11/08/granada-a-cosy-second-home/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Sunset view of the city" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1000157.jpg" border="0" alt="Sunset view of the city" width="482" height="315" /></a></p>
<p>One of our frequent haunts in Alberto’s hometown in Southern Spain, is the outdoor café of the <a href="http://www.h-alhambrapalace.es/Web/Home.htm" target="_blank">Alhambra Palace Hotel</a>. Built in commemoration of the ancient moorish Palace, the Alhambra, it is perched on the hilltop, overlooking the Andalusian city of Granada. We love having a glass of <em>tinto de verano</em> (Spanish concoction of red wine and soda), in the outdoor verandah with a bird’s eye view. Dotted with white-washed houses, the Alhambra Palace on the left and snowy <em>Sierra Nevada</em> (mountain range) on the backdrop, there is no better way to spend some time with each other. And best of all, you get to enjoy it all to yourself, it is after all one of the best kept secrets of Spain. <em>shhh…</em></p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2007/11/08/granada-a-cosy-second-home/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Alhambra Palace with the snow mountains behind" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/p1000878.jpg" border="0" alt="Alhambra Palace with the snow mountains behind" width="502" height="255" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.alhambra.org/" target="_blank">The Alhambra</a> is also a mystical spot to get lost in its maze-like architecture, especially when it gets dark. I was awed by the beauty of the Alhambra on my first visit to Spain, when we went for a night tour of the Alhambra. Dimly lit with yellow lights, the Palace exudes an enigmatic feel where you can’t help but immerse in the Arabic mystique. <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1010374.jpg"><img style="display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="interior of Alhambra Palace hotel" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1010374-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="interior of Alhambra Palace hotel" width="182" height="242" align="left" /></a></p>
<p>The 5-star Alhambra Palace Hotel is definitely costly to stay in, but the café offers reasonably priced drinks from 3-4euros each. With an exquisite Moroccan influenced interior, its decor of arabic lamps and intricate carvings not only enchant you but also add a romantic flavor to your evening.</p>
<p>Every single time we’re in <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2007/11/08/granada-a-cosy-second-home/" target="_blank">Granada</a>, we pay a visit to this café just to remind us of our love for each other, and for this charming city.</p>
<h3>3. Prayers at Tanah Lot Temple – Bali, Indonesia</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2008/09/22/rich-culture-and-beauty-in-bali/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Temple Tanah Lot" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-photo0291.jpg" border="0" alt="Temple Tanah Lot" width="490" height="335" /></a></p>
<p>Tanah Lot Temple is one of the most tranquil and peaceful spots of Bali. <em>It stands in the sea, built out of cliff rocks guttering out of the coastline. </em>A visit to the temple comes with blessings by the local pilgrims who say a little prayer for you, and bless you with rice on your forehead and frangipani flowers. Our favorite place to enjoy the beauty of Tanah Lot are the cafés perched on the cliff top, overlooking the temple, offer fantastic view of the entire coast and a tranquil time for you and your loved one.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-photo0267.jpg"><img style="display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="Rice paddies of Ubud" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-photo0267-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="Rice paddies of Ubud" width="302" height="227" align="left" /></a> These days<a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2008/09/22/rich-culture-and-beauty-in-bali/" target="_blank">, Bali</a> is mostly dominated by lobster-tanned tourists, but fret not, there are still many areas undiscovered by the conventional crowd. The emerald green rice paddies of cultural center, <a href="http://www.ubud.com/" target="_blank">Ubud</a><strong> </strong>, bring you through a journey into the traditions and cultural aspects of Bali, which is one of its kind.</p>
<p>Tanah Lot is approx. 1 hour’s drive away from Kuta, the hotspot of Bali. We rented a jeep for US$15 a day, that took us around the coast, stopping by several temples along the way and up to Ubud.</p>
<h3>4.  Driving along the Great Ocean Road – Melbourne, Australia</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1040338.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Sunset over the 12 Apostles" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1040338-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="Sunset over the 12 Apostles" width="490" height="339" /></a></p>
<p>A recent trip along the Great Ocean Road made me fall head over heels for it again, it’s hard not to. With the ocean breeze in your face, cruising along the coastline, with the dramatic cliff rock formations passing right by, is the perfect way to romance your loved one. At least we did.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1040287.jpg"><img style="display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="Aerial view of the coastline" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1040287-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="Aerial view of the coastline" width="232" height="336" align="left" /></a>The romantic fools in us decided to splurge for once, on a <a href="http://www.12ah.com/" target="_blank">15-minute helicopter ride</a><strong> </strong> that took us high up, with a full frontal view of the <em>12 Apostles, Loch arch Gorge</em> and the rest of the coastline. Our first time on a helicopter, and it rocked. Definitely worth the AU$70!</p>
<p>A natural phenomenon of sea erosion has created the amazing 12 Apostles – odd cliff formations lining the coast. Unfortunately with the impact of the waves, there are only 7 rocks left. Better see it before they are all gone!</p>
<p>Our picnic at the nearby Warnambool made the trip even rosier. With green grass and a swan lake, having a glass of wine and salad makes it a perfect Valentine’s.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1040260.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Picnic by the sea" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1040260-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="Picnic by the sea" width="402" height="227" /></a></p>
<h3>5. Admiring the night view of Singapore – Marina Barrage</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1020829.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="view of the skyline from Marina Barrage" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1020829-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="view of the skyline from Marina Barrage" width="502" height="377" /></a></p>
<p>A newly built man-made dam that separates the Java sea from the Singapore River, <a href="http://www.pub.gov.sg/Marina/Pages/default.aspx" target="_blank">Marina Barrage</a> not only functions as a dam, but also offers state-of-the-art architectural marvels. Built as an eco-friendly spot, the rooftop of the barrage is covered with green grass and wading pools, idyllic for a romantic escape from the city. What’s more, it’s free!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1020817.jpg"><img style="display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="Fountain pools of the barrage" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-p1020817-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="Fountain pools of the barrage" width="242" height="182" align="left" /></a>The best thing about the barrage is its location – right at the outskirts of the CBD (Central Business district) of Singapore, it boasts of an amazing view of the skyline of the city. Yet, in the tranquility, you feel that you’re away from the hustle and bustle of this Asian cosmopolitan city. I love to spend quiet nights here, admiring the twinkling city lights and enjoying the silence of it all. <strong>One of my best spots in Singapore to immerse in romance.</strong></p>
<h3>6. Secret coves at the Venetian pools &#8211; Miami, USA</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/image.png"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="waterfalls of Venetian pools" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/image-thumb1.png" border="0" alt="waterfalls of Venetian pools" width="402" height="269" /></a></p>
<p>This was where we spent some of the most beautiful days together. Miami was where we met, and we had such wonderful memories at the <a href="http://www.venetianpool.com/" target="_blank">Venetian pools</a>. Probably the most romantic spot in Miami, the natural spring water pool formed from coral rock quarry has a vintage vibe to it since its popular days in the 1920s.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/image1.png"><img style="display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="Venetian stairways" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/image-thumb2.png" border="0" alt="Venetian stairways" width="227" height="156" align="left" /></a>We loved the secret hideouts in the coral caves (some private time away from the crowd) , the refreshing waterfalls and grottos. It’s a great site to steal kisses, enjoy the privacy and walk back through the past.</p>
<p>Right near the University of Miami, it’s a great respite from the heat as well.</p>
<h3>7. Cotton clouds of Pamukkale, Turkey</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2007/04/26/turkey-haven-part-i/"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="white travertine of Pamukkale" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/image2.png" border="0" alt="white travertine of Pamukkale" width="482" height="323" /></a></p>
<p>Definitely one of my favorite spots in the world, <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2007/04/26/turkey-haven-part-i/" target="_blank">Pamukkale</a> (Cotton castle) boasts of crystal white limestone pools, laying vicariously over the plateau slopes, forming a beautiful phenomenon of travertine. So pure, lavishing and unspoiled.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, these days, swimming in the pools is prohibited due to environmental damage brought by tourism. Still, sitting by the slopes, <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2007/04/26/turkey-haven-part-i/" target="_blank">watching sunset hand in hand</a> with your loved one – you couldn’t ask for more in life.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-pict01262.jpg"><img style="display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="Sacred pool" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-pict0126-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="Sacred pool" width="302" height="227" align="left" /></a> Besides the cotton clouds, Pamukkale is actually famous for the ancient city of <strong><em><a href="http://www.sacred-destinations.com/turkey/hierapolis-pamukkale.htm">Hierapolis</a></em></strong>. Amazingly well-preserved roman ruins show evidence of an ancient civilization – from the Temple of Apollo to the Hierapolis temple, you could almost feel the entire city come to life! The <strong><em>Sacred pool </em></strong>at the foot of Hierapolis even allows you to swim with ancient artifacts.</p>

<h3>8. Marveling at the architectural beauty of Santorini, Greece</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2006/05/19/santorini-greek-island-of-the-aegean-sea/" target="_blank"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Oia, Santorini" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-pict0113.jpg" border="0" alt="Oia, Santorini" width="442" height="332" /></a></p>
<p>Blue domes and white washed houses litter all over the volcanic island of <a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/2006/05/19/santorini-greek-island-of-the-aegean-sea/" target="_blank">Santorini</a> We were really lucky to have the opportunity to visit the island, seeing that it was world famous, and quite extravangantly expensive. It is possibly the most picturesque island in the Aegean sea – amazing volcanic geology and typically greek architecture.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-pict0115.jpg"><img style="display: inline; margin: 0px 10px 5px 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="blue domes of Santorini" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-pict0115-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="blue domes of Santorini" width="252" height="190" align="left" /></a>We rented a car at the foot of the island for 20euros a day, where we started the steep drive up to the villages of Santorini. <a href="http://www.greeka.com/cyclades/santorini/santorini-villages/oia-santorini.htm" target="_blank">Oia</a> enjoys praises in guidebooks and fellow travelers’ commentaries, as the most beautiful village atop an impressive cliff with a spectacular view of the Aegean sea.</p>
<p>I especially loved having a drink in the cafés along the narrow paths of Oia, offering a view to die for. Life can’t get any better with some wonderful Greek cuisine – salad and Moussaka, along with a shot of Ouzo. How else do you light up the fire of romance, besides the Greek style?</p>
<p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Whitewashed houses on the slopes of Santorini" src="http://www.wildjunket.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tn-pict0125-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="Whitewashed houses on the slopes of Santorini" width="352" height="264" /></p>
<p>No matter where you’re spending your Valentines, the most important thing is being with the one you love. Romance is forever, believe in it, and it’ll come true!</p>
