This October marks five years since the creation of this blog. I started this travel blog in 2008 to chronicle our travel stories and share with our friends and family, but somehow it grew and developed into one of the most popular travel resources on the web and it completely changed my life. This blog has helped pave my way to a career path I absolutely love, allowing me to live a semi-nomadic life that I always dreamt of.
In these five years, we’ve published 735 posts and received over 3 million pageviews and 8,290 comments, traveled to more than 40 countries, and made countless of friends and industry partners.
Along the way, I got my husband to join me in this business, built a team, launched an iPad magazine, and even wrote an adventure handbook (more on that to come). We won the best travel blogger 2012 award from Holiday Extras and our magazine was even nominated as a finalist in the Digital Magazine Awards 2012. We’ve come such an incredibly long way since our humble beginnings in 2008.
The journey here hasn’’t always been smooth sailing. We’ve had our ups and downs, challenges and milestones, but WildJunket continues to grow each year. There are still many areas that we’d like to work on and improve. Here are just a few things I’d like to focus on:
Being more personal
Over the past five years, this site has grown from being a journal-style travel blog to a more versatile travel resource that includes everything from top 10 lists to travel narratives. While I’m extremely proud of what it has become, I cannot help but feel that I’ve lost sight of my original vision for the blog. At the beginning of the year, I talked about changing the direction of the blog and becoming more personal on this blog, sharing more of ourselves and our thoughts. I’m hoping to keep true to my promises and continue to bare more of our inner thoughts here.
Building a community
Through this website and our social media channels, we’ve built up quite a following thanks to your constant support. However, we haven’t been very strong in fostering a community, engaging with you on a more personal level and sharing travel thoughts and ideas on a one-to-one basis. Our goal this year is to build a comfortable network with you, our readers, where we can all hang out and talk about travel.
Traveling less and focusing more on writing
Our focus in the past few years have been to take every opportunity to travel. After all, we came into this business for one main reason and that’s to do what we love most: travel. Building a business with this blog has been a steep learning curve for us and we’ve worked extremely hard to get here. Now that we’ve been traveling full time for around three years, we want to slow down a bit and take our time to focus more on improving our writing/photography as well as other creative projects.
What else would you like to see improved here? Share your ideas and feedback with us in the comment field!
A Special Thank You
Thank you for your constant support! We wouldn’t be here without you. A sincere thanks to everyone who’s been with us every step of the way.
