You can hear and feel the roar of the plunging water even before seeing the waterfall. Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders as the locals call it, is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the world. When you are close to it, specially with the high water volume in winter, it almost feels like the earth has cracked and a sea of water is falling into the planet’s nucleus.
Our purpose of visiting the Victoria Falls was not just to witness this amazing creation of mother nature, but also to get our fix of adrenaline in one of the world’s best settings for adventure. In both Vic Falls town in Zimbabwe and Livingstone in Zambia, there is a myriad of options for adventurous activities ranging from white-water rafting to bungee jumping. I opted for the Gorge Swing, a 72-meter free fall followed by a swing over the Zambezi river, while Nellie went for the Flying Fox, a horizontal fly suspended at 120 meters over the rapids.
Armed with nothing more than a harnesse and my brand new GoPro, I jumped as soon as the instructor said ‘go!’ and after what it felt like an eternity of free fall, I swinged over a spectacular view and felt the adrenaline rush through me like an electric bolt.
Here’s the edited video of the whole experience, I hope it’ll help bring you along with us, to this exhilarating experience in the heart of Africa:
