In a week’s time, we will be heading to South Africa for a week or so of traveling with Cape Town Tourism. It’s barely been a year since I was last there, but I’d been so smitten by the city that I can’t wait to experience it again – and this time, in winter.
My last trip was packed with adventures: from shark cage diving to paragliding off Lion’s Head. Alberto will be joining me this time – and on top of these adventurous activities, we will also go on a cycling tour of Kayalitsch, hike up Platteklip Gorge and a wine tour of Steenberg. Our schedule is flexible (read below), so we’re free to decide what we want to do in between. The trip then culminates with us speaking at the Getaway Travel Blog Conference (here are more details, be sure to join us if you’re in Cape Town).

I will be heading to CApe TOwn and surrounding areas this December. Will be visiting a private game reserve for a Safari experience. But, I’ m perplexed at what type of lens to bring for a private game reserve( 200mm is enough or 400mm?)
I’m not sure if you can help me with this question. Im just testing my luck if you are travelling with any photography experts this time

I have roughly drafted my itinerary for Cape TOwn but if you guys can recommend me some great photographic spots along the way,it will be excellent. As well as some of the markets or where to get reasonably pricred food.

Alberto takes all our photos, so I'll let him share all the photography tips he has. We went to a private game reserve in South Africa as well, it's called Sabi Sands, and it's almost 7 hours away from Johannesburg (long way from Cape Town), thoroughly enjoyed it and saw tons of wildlife! Hope you see some too!
Cape Town is definitely a great spot for photography as well, I highly recommend driving along the Cape Peninsula, where you'll get great shots at Chapman's Peak and Cape Point. Here is a post we just did: http://www.wildjunket.com/2012/08/30/driving-alon…

For game drives I would recommend to bring the longest lens possible. 200mm would be enough sometimes but a 300-400mm would definitely be best since most of the times you'll be shooting the animals from quite a distance. I would also bring a shorter lens in case you have the chance to get close to the wildlife. During our stay in Cheetah Plains, on one of the drives we stopped just some 3 meters away from a group of lions. A 400mm in this situation might be overkill.
