Discovering a Hidden Corner of Spain – Asturias

Posted on April 14, 2011 by

Sprinkled with green prairies and rolling meadows, Asturias breaks all stereotypical notions of Spain. Instead of palm trees and sultry beaches, Asturias is home to mountainous landscapes, sub-zero temperatures and medieval villages reminiscent of Northern Europe. Although visited by Spaniards especially for rural tourism activities, Asturias remain an unexplored region for foreign tourists.

Before coming to Asturias, I’d heard about the abundance of nature, the gorgeous Picos de Europa (mountain peaks) and the fascinating spread of local cuisine in this Northern Spanish community – and now I’m about to experience it for myself.

I’m here in Oviedo, the capital of Asturias as a guest of the Asturias Tourism Board and Turismo.as. We’ll be kicking off our blog trip at the Tourism and Technology Conference before setting off on a 5-day sojourn around the region.

Our itinerary is packed with a myriad of activities: ranging from hiking tours to cultural visits and an epic train ride onboard the Transcantabrico Train. We will be visiting the historic towns of Avilés and Gijón before boarding the train to get to the coastal town of Cudillero.

We’ll then head to the Covadonga Lakes, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, where we’ll be led by a shepherd on a walk through the mountains. The trip will be punctuated with traditional meals and cultural arts performances (bagpipes are the signature musical instrument of the region).

This experience was made possible by Asturias Tourism Board and Turismo.as, but all opinions are my own. Read more about my travels in Asturias here or follow me on Twitter with the #Turismoas hashtag.
